The 16-year-old talent is Drivex’s second confirmed driver for the 2020 Euroformula Open season. Al Habsi will enter the Formula 3-based racing series with the tag of being the youngest driver in the field

Drivex is pleased to announce Shihab Al Habsi for its 2020 Euroformula Open campaign and the Omani youngster is the latest addition to the Spain-based team in the series. Al Habsi and previously announced Dutch driver Glenn van Berlo will team up at the wheel of both Drivex-run Dallara 320 cars, all-new Formula 3-based machines powered by 2-litre HWA-built engines.

Al Habsi will make his debut in the Euroformula Open championship after spending two successful seasons on the FIA-sanctioned Formula 4 racing, which is an acknowledged single-seater feeder series to the pinnacle of motorsport. Oman’s teenage motorsport sensation contested the Championnat de France F4 in 2018 with promising results.

More recently, Al Habsi took part in the F4 Spanish Championship, in which he achieved one win and five other podium finishes. Besides, the Omani driver also ranked third in the F4 United Arab Emirates Championship and fourth in the F4 South East Asia Championship with an impressive record of seven wins and twenty-six podium results.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Al Habsi was unable to carry out a single preseason test in the new 320 car, which includes the latest safety-related technologies such as titanium halo, composite side-impact structures and front and rear impact structures.

Oman’s young talent will make his first outing at the Hungaroring, where the Euroformula Open will kick off the season on 6-9 August. Apart from Hungaroring, the eight-round season will visit Paul Ricard, Red Bull Ring, Monza, Mugello, Spa-Francorchamps, Barcelona and Jarama.

Miguel Ángel de Castro:
“It is a pleasure to welcome Shihab to Drivex because he is a youngster who should be considered a huge prospect and we feel sure Drivex will be able to live up to his full potential. Despite his youth, Shihab has gained experience in several top feeder series around the world, in which he proved to have race-winning potential.

For sure, the Formula 3-based EF Open is another step forward in his racing career with a car generating much more downforce, which is also more physically demanding. It is going to be a real challenge for him but I have no doubts he is ready to take up this new chapter. We feel excited with our pairing of Glenn (van Berlo) and Shihab.”

Shihab Al Habs
i: “Signing with Drivex is a dream come true and I am excited to be competing in the Euroformula Open championship. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has stopped me testing since March and this is my first chance to get back in a race car and try out the new Dallara.

I am so lucky to have amazing support from my home country of Oman and my sponsors: Omantel, Oman Oil Marketing and Oman Air. I am determined to have a great season and make everyone proud.”
