In 1984 and 1985, Olaf Manthey became runner-up in DTM, both times with a Rover Vitesse. Now, the driver from Bonn continued his success story. The 67-year-old is the inaugural title winner in the newly-introduced DTM Classic Cup for touring cars primarily from DTM.


During the finale at Hockenheim, another class win and tenth place overall in the Saturday race with the BMW 635 CSi he shared with Jürgen Adi Schumann was enough for Manthey to seal the title. His fiercest rival, Marc Hessel, was confined to the spectator role due to an engine failure. On Sunday, Manthey drove an Audi 200 quattro for the first time but retired early.



“In DTM Classic, there are no slouches. Therefore, it is very satisfying indeed when you are still able to keep up nicely at my age,” a delighted Manthey said. “DTM Classic is a great idea. It shows the unique DTM history and generates highest emotionality.” That is also confirmed by the finishing order with five brands in the first five places: Mercedes, Opel, Ford, BMW and Audi.



In beautiful weather, spectators also got to see an interesting race with lively position fights on Sunday as well. Like on the previous day, Rudolf Schöllhorn scored a commanding win with the infernally sounding Mercedes C-Class from the 2008 DTM.


“That was a perfect weekend, it couldn’t have been any better. I have made no mistakes and it was unbelievably enjoyable. The atmosphere in DTM Classic really is very nice,” Schöllhorn said. The Opel Calibra 2.5 V6 4x4, raced by ex-Formula 1 world champion Keke Rosberg in 1996, again lasted the entire 16-lap distance, this time driven by Ronny Scheer from Dresden.



“The Calibra is running superbly,” Scheer confirmed, having been given a decent champagne shower by Stefan Mücke. The ex-DTM driver who had also finished second with the Calibra on Saturday, took over the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 from Scheer on Sunday. “That was very demanding, but it is also good fun with this car that has a lot of power and little grip,” Stefan Mücke reported.  
 


Canadian Bruno Spengler, who was crowned DTM champion with BMW at Hockenheim ten years ago, drove the BMW E36 STW from the 1990s to fourth place ahead of Anton Werner with the Audi 200, Norisring winner Gerhard Füller with the Opel Vectra STW and Nico Wittmann with the BMW M3 E30, the brother of DTM Sunday race winner Marco Wittmann.



The story behind eighth place for Michael Schneider was remarkable: ex-DTM team Ringshausen brought his Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 was brought from Westerwald to Hockenheim overnight as a replacement for the Sierra that had retired on Saturday.




 Markus Reich (AUT) with his Audi A4 STW and Jürgen Adi Schumann with his BMW 635 CSi rounded out the top ten. Highly entertaining was the duel over many laps for twelfth and 13th place between the two BMW 325i drivers Albrecht Kainzinger and Peter Zimmermann.
