The Racing Engineering team are in Austria for the latest round of the 2015 GP2 Series.

18.06.2015: Round four of the 2015 GP2 Series and it’s time for the teams and drivers to return

Round four of the 2015 GP2 Series and it’s time for the teams and drivers to return to the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg in Austria.

This will be only the second time the 4.326km circuit has hosted a GP2 race weekend following the Series debut there last year where the Racing Engineering had an excellent weekend with their drivers taking third and fourth in the Feature Race and second and third in the Sprint Race.

Racing Engineering’s two drivers, Jordan King and Alexander Rossi, will be looking forward to the challenge of the Austrian track and Alexander raced here last year in GP2 taking two top eight finishes. Jordan has raced here several times in the European F3 Championship finishing on the podium three times and winning a round in 2014.

The previous three rounds have shown that both men are very quick in both qualifying and race conditions and Alexander lies second in the Drivers’ Championship with three podium finishes whilst Racing Engineering is also second in the Team Standings.

 1. The Red Bull Ring is a circuit located in the village of Spielberg, near the town of Zeltweg, Styria, Austria.

2. Its 4 long straights give way to a very nice inner area with right-angle corners where traction is crucial.

3. In 2014 both Racing Engineering drivers had strong results in both races. While race 1 saw them in 3rd and 4th position, they were both on the podium of race 2.

4. The F1 weekend at the RBR is a spectacle for motorsport fans. You can see Gerhard Berger, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost or Riccardo Patrese race their cars from the 80’s, when engines had 1400hp.

5. The “made in Austria” grid girls, Formula Unas, are all wearing hand made traditional dresses, a “Dirndl”, from the Styria region.

6. The circuit that lives in great symbiosis with the architecture and landscape is built in a natural basin.

7. 44 monitors are in operation using 26 cameras providing a seamless view of the race track.

8. A special feature of the racetrack are the differences in elevation, maximum uphill grade: 12% and maximum grade: 9.3%.

9. The circuit is 677m above sea level.

10. The on-track action at the Red Bull Ring takes place in the shadows of a giant Red Bull sculpture which sits in the middle of the infield section at Turns 4, 5, 6 and 7.

GP2  versus F1

1. The average speed in F1 is 220 km/h in F1 and 200 km/h in GP2.

2. F1 throttle usage is 82% vs 70% of the lap that the engine spends at full throttle in GP2.

3. F1 top speed (including DRS) is 315 km/h – GP2 (without DRS) is 293 km/h.

4. F1 drivers will shift gear 38 times per lap against 33 times that a GP2 driver will have to do.

5. Race distance is different: F1 goes around the circuit for 71 laps and GP2 does a total of 68 laps during its two races- 40 laps in Feature Race and 28 in the Sprint Race.

6. Pole position in F1 was set in 2014 at 1:08.759 – Pole position in GP2 was set in 2014 at 1:15.312.
