Pleven plays host to first Supermoto GP in Bulgaria

18.07.2007: Pleven plays host to first Supermoto GP in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is ready to host its first FIM Supermoto World Championship event this weekend at Pleven. After Torino and Alcarràs, this is the third brand new circuit hosting the series in 2007, confirming the growing interest in the sport of Supermoto.

No riders have the advantage of knowing this astonishing circuit, which will make the fight for the S1 top spot between leader Thierry Van Den Bosch and runner up Adrien Chareyre -both level on points- even closer.

In the S2 class Attilio Pignotti has a complicated defence of his top spot, being followed by a gutsy Gerald Delepine and an upcoming Davide Gozzini.

Baptiste Rheims looks forward to this round, and hopes to increase his advantage over runner up Tommaso Iacoboni in the fight for the S3 Title. Petr Vorlicek has a lot less pressure, as he has already secured an over 100 point advantage over Lionel Deridder, second in the Open class standings.

S1

Both Chareyre brothers of CH Azzalin have come back to Thierry Van Den Bosch’s tail in the latest round in Germany.

Finally racing with the new Husqvarna machines, Adrien and Thomas proved the quality of the bike by making it to the overall podium behind VDB.

But Aprilia Off Road’s multiple World Champion brilliantly survived a critical test for his twin cylinder machine, which normally does not suit the twisty Sankt Wendel circuit, and won one moto and the overall.

Bulgaria can feature another clash between these three talents, but KTM Italia Miglio’s Bernd Hiemer seems to have finally got to grips with the KTM 450, which he was not used, as he raced and won the 2006 S2 class.

Hiemer smelled the podium in his home Germany, and will probably try an "all or nothing" race at the Dolna Mitropolia facility.

Kevin Berthome was another solid rider at the latest GP, but he interrupted his podium row from France and Spain. On the other hand, Fabio Balducci of TM Factory showed another self and rode two solid moto’s to finish a brilliant sixth.

The Italian will head to Bulgaria with renewed confidence, as he showed he has the pace to lap with the top five guys.

Countryman Ivan Lazzarini will try to make up for Germany, where he had two difficult moto’s despite starting from the front row.

S2

Thanks to great race intelligence and tactic, Attilio Pignotti of KTM Italia Miglio is now leading the S2 standings. The Italian is always consistent, and avoids mistakes to score points in every heat –only Pignotti has such a consistency among the top four riders.

But CH Azzalin’s Gerald Delepine does not give up, and keeps following the Italian with a more aggressive strategy, which is winning as many heats as he can.

Winner in Germany, in the final heat the Belgian had to surrender to an incredible Maxime Testu, using his first career front row start to clinch a flawless win.

This weekend Testu of Husaberg WP factory IPA will surely come back stronger and with a new mentality after having clinched his maiden victory, but Aprilia Off Road’s Christian Iddon will be highly motivated too. The Brit had a tough GP in Germany, dropping down to fourth in the standings.

Davide Gozzini of TM Factory is now up in third, exploiting the high speed of his 660 machine made in Pesaro.

Nestor Jorge of BQR Aprilia Spain is another rider who has found a renewed confidence since the midway point of this season, when he finally got to grips with the machine. The Spaniard will now race for victory in each round, but some unforced mistakes have dropped him off the podium in the latest two events.

For Slovenian Ales Hlad of Motoracing Team, Pleven is a "home away from home", and this reason will surely be a great push for the 2006 Greek GP winner, now ninth in the points standings.

Greece 2006 was milestone also for Matthew Winstanley of Robinsons Rochdale KTM UK; Matt is currently fourth in the Championship, but has not come to a podium or another heat victory like Greece yet.

UEM-EUROPEAN SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIP

In the S3 class, Frenchman Baptiste Rheims cannot get rid of rival Tommaso Iacoboni, who will probably never give up until the final heat of the season as he already has sat on the series lead before.

Riccardo Peroni is a bit behind the leading duo, but holds a solid third place that can change into a better position if the Italian will come back to victory. In the meantime he defends his spot from the attacks of two youngsters, such as Chris Hodgson and Olivier Scheen, rounding off the top five.

Czech steamroller Petr Vorlicek is impossible to stop this season, having won each single moto except for one. But the runaway leader seems to have found someone who can chip the gap away; that is Belgian talent Lionel Deridder, who is second in the series at the moment.

The latter has not only Vorlicek in his sights, because there is a much closer Luca De Angelis pushing him from third place.

Uros Nastran will be another rider to watch in Pleven; back from the podium of Germany, Nastran will race the only event in the calendar which is the closest to his home Slovenia.

DOLNA MITROPOLIA AND PLEVEN

The Dolna Mitropolia circuit is a brand new facility that was built especially for Supermoto; with a healthy support from the local Government, this circuit is ready to become the most significant complex in the world dedicated to Supermoto. Organizer BMF- Bulgarian Motorcycle Federation is well known for its hard work, as it won the Best Organizer Award at Monte Carlo’s FIM Off Road Awards 2006 for the Motocross track in Sevlievo.

The big news of Dolna Mitropolia is the off-road section covered in tarmac, which is a world’s first in the FIM Supermoto World Championship.

With the entrance of Bulgaria in the EU on January 1st, the whole country is developing a lot, and the same goes for Pleven. The city is in the North of Bulgaria, about 170 kilometres North-West of Sofia, and lies on the central part of the Danube lowland. Pleven is the seventh largest city in the country, having about 150000 inhabitants living in its urban centre.

The city has kept a lot of its cultural and historical heritage, and is actually known as the town of museums. Some of its main buildings are the theatre house "Ivan Radoev" founded in 1919, and the fascinating building hosting the exhibition-donation "Svetlin Rusev".
