Sankt Wendel: Van den Bosch to assault Chareyre for Championship Lead

05.07.2007: Sankt Wendel: Van den Bosch to assault Chareyre for Championship Lead

After visiting the very fast track of Alcarràs for the first time two weeks ago, the FIM Supermoto World Championship is back to action this weekend at the twisty city circuit of Sankt Wendel.

The German venue that hosted its first World Championship event last year will be the scenery of the fifth round of the series; at the moment, Adrien Chareyre is leading the S1 series, as Attilio Pignotti is on top of the S2 class standings.

The exciting UEM European Supermoto Championship has a runaway leader in the shape of Petr Vorlicek, who won all the Open class meetings so far, but S3 leader Baptiste Rheims is facing a lot more opposition during his first season in the series.

S1

Aprilia Off Road’s Thierry Van Den Bosch dominated the Spanish GP, but his second double victory was not enough for the 32 year old Frenchman to come back to the top of the standings.

VDB is currently chasing countryman Adrien Chareyre of CH Azzalin, who lies on the top of the points standings, with one single point more than the three time World Champion.

Adrien Chareyre missed the podium in Spain for the first time this season, but he is looking forward to a comeback in Germany, where last year he injured his right foot on Saturday’s practice.

Aprilia Off Road’s second rider in the S1 class, Jerome Giraudo, did come back on the podium in the latest round –it was the first podium since Latina 2006- finding renew confidence for this forthcoming FIM Supermoto Grand Prix of Germany.

There is another rider leaving his mark on this Supermoto season, it is Kevin Berthome of Rexfelgen Wheels Cross2R. The 25 year old from Cavaillon, France, is experiencing his first injury-free season, and has already clinched two back to back podiums, the latest being in Alcarràs.

Berthome is showing great skills and speed on both road and off-road, the two grounds making up the Supermoto tracks.

Also young gun Thomas Chareyre of CH Azzalin is on a season high, and after having suffered a little bit in Spain, he will be back for sure in Sankt Wendel, to defend his third spot in the Championship.

KTM Italia Miglio’s Bernd Hiemer is just out of the top five, but the German is slowly finding himself in his first season in the S1 class. Hiemer won last year in Sankt Wendel, that can probably become the scene of his maiden S1 podium.

Three time GP winner Juergen Kuenzel will come back to the World Championship this weekend, in his home event. Kuenzel will race onboard the Kawasaki of his personal team, Kuenzel Racing.

Angel Grau will stand in for a still injured Eddy Seel, as Mike Valade will race this round with Gil Motor Sport, alongside 2005 World Champion Boris Chambon.

S2

Crashing once each in Alcarràs, Gerald Delepine of CH Azzalin and Christian Iddon of Aprilia Off Road were snatched the Championship position by KTM Italia Miglio’s Attilio Pignotti.

The Italian got the red plate back, as he won the season opener in Castelletto but lost the lead in the following round in Torino, the scene of Iddon’s maiden GP win.

Experienced Pignotti has a lot of pressure on himself this weekend, when both Delepine and Iddon will be men out for revenge.

The Belgian World Champion rounded off Sankt Wendel’s podium last year, as Iddon picked up a knee injury that hampered the Brit’s results for the rest of the season.

Davide Gozzini finally came back to victory in Spain, his first win with TM, and looks forward to closing the 25 point gap from countryman Pignotti.

The TM 660 Supermoto machine was strong in Alcarràs, placing also Lorenzo Mariani on his maiden podium, in second place.

Mariani will try to repeat that great performance this weekend, but the latest round was a milestone for BQR Aprilia Spain’s Nestor Jorge too.

The Spaniard made unforced mistakes in the final moto and lost his podium chance, but his results demonstrated that now he is totally at ease with his new Aprilia SXV 550.

Matthew Winstanley of Robinsons Rochdale KTM UK is expected to join the top five once again this weekend; the Wigan Whippet started the season with consistency, but has to repeat his maiden moto victory from Greece 2006 if he wants to improve on his current seventh place in the Championship.

The German GP will see the special appearance of Jochen Jasinski, who will ride the Husaberg of Team Motorraeder. Jasinski has impressive off-road skills, as he has raced Motocross GP’s in the past; his latest and only full season in the Supermoto World Championship was back in 2003.

UEM-EUROPEAN SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIP

Baptiste Rheims and Tommaso Iacoboni keep battling for the top spot in the Championship; Frenchman Rheims was back to it after the dominant victory in Spain, but Iacoboni stays close to his rival and will try a new attack in Germany.

Both riders will experience the twisty German circuit for the first time, and they need to get to grips with it quickly, otherwise third placed Riccardo Peroni can close the gap from them.

British Chris Hodgson is consistent, but he has been working hard on his speed to improve on his fourth position in the standings; Hodgson is not experiencing an easy first season, as Olivier Scheen is following him from really close, and will probably be a threat in Sankt Wendel.

Runaway leader Petr Vorlicek has not found a rival capable to beat him yet, but the Championship is still long, and someone dangerous can come out already this weekend.

Runner up Lionel Deridder is an upcoming talent; he and coach Christophe Bertrand are working hard to beat Vorlicek, and avoid the Czech’s escape in the Championship after a disappointing Spanish round.

On the other hand, third placed Luca De Angelis is a solid rider who currently chases Deridder for the second place; Omar Pelliccioni and Alberto Dall’Era complete the top five at the moment, but the latter showed positive signs in Alcarràs, making it to the overall podium ahead of Malcolm Schneider and Richard Blakeman, other two riders who will be aiming at the top three in Germany.

SANKT WENDEL – THE CIRCUIT AND THE TOWN

The city circuit at Sankt Wendel is one of the most twisty in the calendar; it reminds a little bit of Villars sous Ecot, but it is much more flat than the French venue. Always enjoying a healthy crowd attendance, the German venue is about to host its second World Championship event. Mid and low range power, and an excellent gear ratio will be vital requirements to succeed on the technical course located right outside the centre of Sankt Wendel.

With about 20000 inhabitants, Sankt Wendel is one of the most interesting towns of the region Saarland, which is becoming more and more international by hosting world wide and TV covered events such as the FIM Supermoto World Championship.

The town is nearly 200 kilometres away from Frankfurt; the name of Sankt Wendel replaced the old "Basonvillaris", and came from Saint Wendelin, a member of the Irish-Scottish monk congregation living there in the 6th century.

The city centre is marked by the Basilica Wendelinus, but also Castle Square and the Globe Fountain - created by artist Christian Mayer- are worth a visit.

The weather forecast predicts showers for Friday and Saturday, as Sunday should be sunny and dry.
