Conquest Racing Kansas Race Report

29.04.2008: Conquest Racing Kansas Race Report

Conquest Racing completed their second IndyCar Series oval race of the season today at Kansas Speedway at the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300. The team saw how quickly things can turn around from one race to the next as today’s results were not quite as expected. The team did however come out of the 200 lap race with plenty of knowledge that will help them in future races.

The race got off to an adventurous start for the Conquest team when Enrique Bernoldi (#36 ALT/ Sangari Dallara/Honda/Firestone) spun on the first lap and tapped the wall with his front wing and left front tire. The Brazilian was able to continue, but after 54 laps, Bernoldi had to retire due to damage to the steering column that was caused in the first lap incident.

Bernoldi’s teammate, Jaime Camara (#34 Sangari Dallara/Honda/Firestone) was taking part in his first IndyCar Series race and it wasn’t an easy one for the Brazilian. The rookie had a good first stint but the car got loose on him after the first pit stop in addition to radio problems.

After falling a few laps down, the team focused on gaining knowledge and took the time to try different things on the Dallara in order to improve the car and collect data for the future.

Conquest Racing Quoteboard

21st- Jaime Camara #34 Sangari Dallara/ Honda/ Firestone

"The race started pretty good. During the first stint I could pass quite a few guys. But after the first pit stop I got a little bit loose in traffic and I couldn’t keep up with the guys in front of me and I was losing positions so I stopped to make an adjustment to the car to figure out what was going on. After going a few laps down we decided to use the race more as a practice session to fix the problem and learn for the next races.

We did quite a few changes and the car got a lot better especially with the last change. At the end, I could run the same lap times as the leaders so we found a way but unfortunately it was at the end of the race. I think the team learned a lot and I learned a lot and it will help us in the future."

25th- Enrique Bernoldi #36 ALT / Sangari Dallara/Honda/Firestone

"I got a good start but on the first lap I was a bit blocked because there were two cars side by side so I lifted a bit and mid corner I went back full throttle to get by Servia but there were still two cars in front of me and when I was releasing the steering wheel, the car just snapped in oversteer, I spun and touched the wall on the outside.

I did a 360 and was able to continue but I had to pit for a new front nose. I was trying to be aggressive but I had cold tires and I lost some downforce as well. I was able to continue in the race after but when I hit the wall it damaged the steering column and as the laps went by it became too heavy. I tried to do more laps but the steering was locking and I couldn’t continue."

Eric Bachelart, Conquest Racing owner

"Our fortunes have definitely turned around from one weekend to the next. We had a difficult day today but I believe we will come out stronger as a team after we have a good debriefing at the shop. Jamie had his hands full during the race with a difficult car to drive along with radio problems.

We worked on it and managed to find a good balance by the end of the race. He has shown lots of maturity and has done exactly what we asked him to do. He has done an excellent job all weekend.

Enrique spun earlier in the race and unfortunately damaged his car beyond repair. We will now go back to our base, regroup and focus on the Indy 500."
