Enrique Bernoldi Sixth on Provisional Grid for Conquest Racing in Long Beach

19.04.2008: Enrique Bernoldi Sixth on Provisional Grid for Conquest Racing in Long Beach

Conquest Racing rookies Enrique Bernoldi and Franck Perera took part in their first Champ Car qualifying session today with Bernoldi finishing the 30-minute session in sixth place while his teammate Perera, whose DP01 had fuel pressure problems, was 16th on the provisional grid for Sunday’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Both drivers will have a chance to improve their position tomorrow during the final round of qualifying.

Bernoldi, (#36 Sangari Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone) who was the first of the two Conquest drivers out on track, completed seven laps in his first stint placing himself as high as second on his fourth lap. When the Brazilian headed back out for his second stint he was in 11th position overall and five laps later he registered a lap time of 1:08.272 (103.773 mph) which was good enough to place him sixth on the provisional grid in his Champ Car debut.

His teammate Franck Perera (#34 Conquest Racing Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone) was not as fortunate. The Frenchman had to deal with some fuel pressure problems in the morning practice session and unluckily for Perera the same problems came back to haunt him in qualifying. He still managed to put in the 16th quickest time of the session out of the 20 car field thanks to a lap of 1:09.153 (102.451 mph).

Conquest Racing Quoteboard

6th - Enrique Bernoldi #36 Sangari Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

Qual 1: 1:08.272 (103.773 mph)

"I was pushing hard. I had a few misfortunes with the traffic in both stints but I was pushing hard and the car was running well. I was getting more used to it from the morning. It’s different compared to the Dallara. So as I got more used to the car I also got more familiar with the track. I’m happy and I think tomorrow we can improve a lot still. (About the track) It’s a nice track. You have to push a lot here but also to be smooth. It’s a technical track and with the bumps it makes it harder but so far I like it!"

16th - Franck Perera #34 Conquest Racing Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

Qual 1: 1:09.153 (102.451 mph)

"Unfortunately I didn’t get much track time this morning because we had some fuel pressure issues and then again in the pre-qualifying practice session the fuel pressure problems came back which affected our qualifying run. We will resolve the issue for tomorrow and fortunately we have another chance on Saturday to improve our qualifying position."

Eric Bachelart, Conquest Racing owner

"We had an up and down session today. Enrique did a really good job in his first Champ Car qualifying session. You can tell that he is getting more comfortable on the street courses and he was quickly up to speed in only his second time in the DP01 if you count the Sebring test. As for Franck, he was just unlucky today with the fuel pressure problems that he had in both the morning practice and again in qualifying but everything will be resolved for tomorrow’s session and we should see him up front with his teammate."
