Round four of the 2014 GP2 Series sees something new for the teams and drivers at this weekend’s venue, the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg in Austria, as the Series has never raced or practised here before which means that everybody will have to start from scratch in setting up their cars for this 4.326km circuit.


As the circuit is a mixture of two relatively long straights with a tight and twisty section Pirelli are supplying the P Zero White medium and P Zero Yellow soft compounds as their nominated tyres for the weekend.

Racing Engineering’s two drivers, Stefano Coletti and Raffaele Marciello, will be looking forward to the challenge of the Austrian track and Lello has recent experience of the track having raced and won here in the 2012 and 2013 FIA European Formula 3 Championship.


In the previous three rounds both men have shown they are very quick in both qualifying and race condi! tions, however luck has not been with them so far but this weekend they will both be looking to finish on the podium.

1. It’s the first time that GP2 will race in Austria. Racing Engineering, however, has already been successful in Austria by taking pole and the race win with Bas Leinders in 2003.


2. Lello raced at the Red Bull Ring in 2013, for Stefano it will be the first time that he has driven on the Austrian track.


3. The track length of 4,3km corresponds to the 1996-2003 Grand Prix layout.


4. A characteristic of the Red Bull Ring are the changes in altitude (max. ascent 12%, max. descent 9,3%).


5. The only Austrian to win his home Grand Prix was Niki Lauda in 1984.


6. The driver winning most Grand Prix in Austria is Alain Prost (1983, 1985, 1986).


7. The first Austrian GP took place in 1964.


8. For turn 2 cars have to slow down from almost 300km/h to 70km/h.


9. After previously been called the österreichring and the A1 Ring, the track underwe! nt extensive refurbishment and was reopened as the Red Bull Ring on the 15th of May, 2011.


10. With only 8 corners (6 right, 2 left) the Red Bull Ring is a rather short track. Holder of the lap record (1:08.337) is Michael Schumacher.


11. Niki Lauda and Gerhand Berger both lost corners named after them at the RBR. “Their” corners will be renamed Pirelli-Kurve and Würth-Kurve respectively. The corner dedicated to F1’s only posthumous World Champion, Jochen Rindt, is unchanged.
