Walker Racing Atlantics Back on Track for Spring Training
|
After a long and eventful three week break, Walker Racing was happy to get back on track. The Indianapolis based squad completed a successful two days of testing at the breathtaking Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California, with drivers Canadian Kevin Lacroix, and Englishmen Greg and Leo Mansell.
"All three drivers did a great job. The test went really well and we accomplished a lot. We completed lots of laps and the team did fantastic. There was a lot of good camaraderie. We really did improve quite a bit to everyone else and the overall times didn’t reflect our true progress," stated Derrick Walker, Walker Racing owner.
Topping the time charts for the Atlantic team was Greg Mansell (No.5 Sunseeker), son of 1992 Formula 1 World Champion and 1993 IndyCar champion Nigel Mansell. The 20 year old Englishman, was the seventh fastest overall with a time of 1:17.366 seconds. "Overall we had a good test, but really showed improvement on the second day. We learned a lot and maintained a competitive pace. It has been too long since we have been in the car and it was nice to see a full grid," commented Greg Mansell.
Ready to get back in the cockpit was Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada native, Kevin Lacroix (No.25 Uni-Select/ Deans Knight Capital Management Ltd.). The 19 year old was the eighth fastest overall, turned a time of 1:16.386 seconds. "We didn’t have the best of luck. Every time we went out on new tires we got caught by traffic or a red flag and weren’t able to clock the fastest time. Overall the car felt great and it was good to just finally get back to racing," said Lacroix.
Excited to be apart of the strong Atlantic field, Leo Mansell (No.15 Sunseeker), enjoyed racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the first time. "It’s a fantastic track with all of the high speed corners. It was nice to get back on track after three weeks and be apart of a strong grid. It will be a very competitive season," stated Leo Mansell. The 23 year old was 16th quickest overall with a time of 1:17.109 seconds.
The test proved to be just what the doctor ordered for Walker Racing with the looming uncertainty the past weeks have delivered. "It truly was good to get back to racing. We met with Atlantic officials along with Dick Eidswick and Mazda, who really answered a lot of our questions. Everyone is doing their best effort to provide us with positive feedback. The good news is it will be a competitive season and I’m happy to say Walker Racing will be a part of it," said Walker.
Walker Racing will head back to Indianapolis and regroup on all fronts. "After the statement we made on Sunday regarding our IndyCar effort, we have had tremendous support and a number of inquiries that may produce some ability to compete in the IndyCar Series on some level whether it be a full or half season. At least it will give us the chance to compete at some capacity. We remain cautiously optimistic," continued Walker.
Next up for the Walker Racing Atlantic squad is the 34th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 18-20. For more updates on Walker Racing please visit www.walkerracing.com
