Barcelona Q& A with Jordan King: ”…Barcelona is unique…”

04.05.2015: After a three week break it is time for round 2 of the 2015 GP2 Series and after the

After a three week break it is time for round 2 of the 2015 GP2 Series and after the heat and sand of Bahrain the GP2 teams will be assembling in the spring sunshine of Barcelona.

For the Sanlúcar de Barrameda based Racing Engineering team this will be their home race and following a very promising opening race weekend with a third and two fourth positions a lot of positive insights were gained and the team has worked hard during the recent weeks to give an even better performance.

Below Racing Engineering driver Jordan King looks forward to his first GP2 race on the Circuit de Catalunya.

Finishing both races of your first GP2 race event in the top 10 and almost making it onto the podium in your first ever feature race must have been a really good boost to your confidence and motivation. Are you happy with how your first GP2 weekend went?

As an overview I am happy with how the weekend went. There was much to learn but I feel we did a good job and almost getting a podium was a great success for me.

Overall, the weekend went very well, lots of positives and we didn’t let the few negatives hinder our progress which is a good sign for the future. Obviously we would have liked a podium, but 4th and showing a strong race pace was very good.

Round two takes place in Barcelona and, unlike Bahrain, where all teams tested for 3 days before the races, the Spanish round will a bit of an unknown, especially for you as a rookie. How does this influence your preparation?

I have raced at Barcelona Circuit before, so I know the track. The biggest unknown is what the GP2 car is capable of but I am sure the engineers and team will help me to learn quickly.

I do not think we will change anything, it not being different to what we do for events normally, and with no previous knowledge, we just look at things in a more detailed way.

What are the requirements of the Barcelona circuit in regards to the car and driver?

Barcelona is unique; it has a lot of different types of corners, high speed, low speed, tight and twisty, and also long and flowing. It’s hard to overtake but DRS will add a different dimension to it. It will be necessary to get a good balance.

Tyre management was the crucial factor in Bahrain. Do you think in Barcelona you will once more have to pay special attention to the tyres or are there other more dominant factors?

From what I have been told Barcelona is not as bad as Bahrain, but, that said, we will still have to manage the tyres. It will be hard on the left hand tyres and the traction.

This weekend will be the first time you have raced at Barcelona with a GP2 car. What are your expectations for the Spanish round?

I would like to improve on my Bahrain Round, so I want to get two points scoring finishes and to try to get a place on the podium.
