Monaco Q& A with Alexander Rossi: ”… how special a place Monaco is …”

19.05.2015: The first two race weekends in the 2015 GP2 Series has shown that both of the Racing

The first two race weekends in the 2015 GP2 Series has shown that both of the Racing Engineering drivers, Alexander Rossi and Jordan King, are amongst the fastest drivers competing which is shown that, in four races, they have scored two third and two fourth places with Alexander lying third in the Drivers’ Championship and Racing Engineering second in the team standings.

The next round, to be held this weekend at Monaco, gives both men the opportunity to turn their speed into more podium finishes.

Below Racing Engineering driver Alexander Rossi looks forward to racing on the streets of Monaco.

Your 2015 season started well. You finished the first two feature races on the podium and both Sunday races in 4th. Did you expect to be so consistently in the top positions this season?

I think that every time you start a new season or a new weekend for that matter, you go in with high expectations. This year in particular is the first time that I have competed in GP2 with a championship winning team and that gives me a great deal of confidence every time I step into the racecar.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this team and I think the results thus far are a representation of a lot of hard work from everybody involved.

Round 3 of the 2015 season is held in Monaco, one of the most complicated circuits of the Championship, leaving no margin of error. How does it feel for a driver to race there?

It is a very surreal feeling and almost feels too good to be true. The most special part of the lap for me is exiting Saint Devote (Turn 1) and climbing the hill up to the casino because it is there that you realize that magnitude of where you are driving and how special a place Monaco is.

Apart from a good starting position, what are the major challenges of racing in the Principality?

I think the biggest challenge is what you have already mentioned, the starting position. This is due to the nature of the circuit and how difficult it is to overtake.

That is why qualifying is a major focus of everyone going into the weekend – figuring out how to be quick immediately and finding a car that you, as a driver, can be confident in from the first lap.

Currently being third in the GP2 Drivers’ Championship what are your expectations for Monaco?

We are third in the championship but admittedly a long way off of the championship leader who has done an outstanding job thus far. So aside from the obvious goal of winning, our focus needs to be to keep on bringing in big points and hopefully closing the gap to the leader.
