20.05.2015: Round three of the 2015 GP2 Series sees the GP2 cars and drivers at that most glamorous




Round three of the 2015 GP2 Series sees the GP2 cars and drivers at that most glamorous of racing venues, the streets of Monte Carlo where the smallest mistake can mean instant retirement and where, more than any other track, a good performance in qualifying is vital to a good race result.


For Alexander this is an opportunity to add to his excellent results so far this season that see him lying third in the Drivers’ Championship whilst Jordan will be looking to put the disappointment of Barcelona behind him and to return to the pace he showed at Bahrain.


In a change to the normal GP2 programme practice and qualifying will take place on Thursday and for qualifying the drivers will be split into two groups, one driver from each team in each group, to avoid overcrowding on the track when looking for a fast lap.


The Feature Race will be run on Friday morning and the Sprint Race on Saturday afternoon. D! ue to the relatively low speeds at Monaco Pirelli will be supplying their P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero Red supersoft compounds to the teams.

1. The 1933 Monaco Grand Prix was the first Grand Prix to have qualifying. Until then, the starting order was established by a raffle.


2. This circuit is the narrowest of the season, which makes overtaking difficult.


3. With some variations, the circuit has essentially been the same throughout its history. When the first races where held there it was 3,145 meters long and it currently stretches 3,340 meters in length.


4. Monaco has a special configuration with tight corners and short straights.


5. In Monte Carlo, the race can be enjoyed from a balcony, a terrace, lying in a hammock, or savoring a snack at any of the luxury hotels and casinos in the Principality.


6. The Monte Carlo circuit is the most difficult, dangerous, and yet entertaining of the whole Championship.


7. For race teams the logistics for the Monaco GP are always a challe! nge in the 2,02km2 Principality.


8. Monaco is located on a promontory of the French Riviera, and its irregular relief is formed by the foothills of the Alps.


9. The most famous part of the circuit is the corner in front of the luxurious Fairmont Hotel. It is the slowest of all the corners and reaches down to the tunnel that goes under the hotel.


10. The Automobile Club de Monaco stores the necessary material for the infrastructure of the Grand Prix in industrial units rented in Nice and Italy.



GP2 versus F1


1. The average speed around the track is the lowest of the year, just 160km/h in F1 and only 149 km/h in GP2.


2. F1 top speed (including DRS) is 285 km/h – GP2 (without DRS) is 270 km/h.


3. F1 drivers will change gear 62 times per lap against the 37 times that a GP2 driver will have to.


4. Race distance is different: F1 goes around the circuit for 78 laps and GP2 does a total of 70 laps during its two races- 40 laps in Feature Race and 30 in the Sprint Race.


5. Downforce levels are alike but still different: Maximum downforce levels in F1 against high levels in GP2.


6. Pole position in F1 was set in 2014 at 1:15.989 – Pole position in GP2 was set in 2014 at 1:20.774.
