One of the most famous circuit’s in the world, Monza, is the venue for this weekend’s GP2 Series races, round eight of the 2015 Championship and the Racing Engineering team and their two drivers, Alexander Rossi and Jordan King, are looking forward to the challenges of the Italian circuit.


 For Alexander, after his tremendous race win at the last round at Spa Francorchamps, it will be a chance for the young American to look for more wins and points to help secure his second place in the Championship table. Jordan, after his excellent second place in Spa, his best result so far in his rookie season, it will be a chance to take his first win in GP2, an achievement he is looking more and more likely to attain.


The venue for this weekend is the historic circuit of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy. This exciting 5.793km track, built nearly ninety years ago, has been the location for the Ital! ian Grand Prix for every race since 1922 (except for 1980).


Famed for its long straights and legendary high speed corners such as the Curva Parabolica, Curva di Lesmo and Variante Ascari, Monza has been the site of some of the closest finishes in the history of Grand Prix racing.


Pirelli will be providing the P Zero Orange hard and P Zero White medium compound tyres this weekend. The cars run low downforce at Monza, in order maximise top speed on the long straights, so that mechanical rather than aerodynamic grip is key when it comes to direction changes.


The Monza circuit asks a lot from the tyres with the first chicane requiring heavy braking, the Variante Ascari and its rapid changes of direction and the famous Parabolica: a long and open corner that generates high lateral forces.

GP2 MONZA FACTS



  1. Monza is known as "The Temple of Speed" or "La Pista Magica".


2. Monza is the fastest circuit of the Championship in terms of average speed.


3. The Italian Grand Prix was designated seven times Grand Prix of Europe between 1923 and 1967.


4. The work to build this circuit began on the 15th of May 1922 and through the efforts of 35,000 workers, was completed in 110 days.


5. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is a racetrack located in the park of the Royal Villa of Monza, Lombardy, Italy.


6. Juan Pablo Montoya achieved the highest ever speed recorded during an F1 race, 372.6 km/h, in the 2005 Italian Grand Prix.


7. The circuit consists of 11 corners along with the broad straights that form the 5,793 meters in length.


8. The two main straights are the start-finish straight, with 958 meters in length, and the straight precedin! g the “Parabolica”, with 1.194 meters in length.


9. The tyres suffer great wear caused by heavy braking, but it is not really a problem due to the fact that they recover their ideal temperatures again on the broad straights.


10. The most popular corner is the Parabolica, the final right hander of the circuit. It has always been a challenge for drivers because they want to carry enough speed through the corner and not lose time on the start-finish straight.



GP2 versus F1



  1. F1 top speed peaks at over 349kph down the pit straight just before the first chicane, whereas in GP2 the top speed goes up to 325 km/h.


2. In Monza, although the top speed of a GP2 car is very high, the lap time of a GP2 is 8.3 seconds slower than an F1 (comparing pole position times).


3. Pole position in F1 was set in 2014 at 1:24.109 – Pole position in GP2 was set in 2014 at 1:31.707.


4. The average speed in F1 is 250km/h in F1 and 227 km/h in GP2.


5. F1 throttle usage is 74% vs 76% of the lap that the engine spends at full throttle in GP2.


6. F1 drivers will change gear 40 times per lap against the 34 times that a GP2 driver will have to do.


7. Race distance is not so different: F1 go around the circuit for 53 laps and GP2 do a total of 51 laps in two days- 30 laps in Feature Race and 21 in the Sprint Race.
