A1 Team GBR take dominant victory in A1GP series opener Zandvoort

30.09.2007: A1 Team GBR take dominant victory in A1GP series opener Zandvoort

Round 1 - Saturday Practice & Qualifying Report

Oliver Jarvis got A1 Team Great Britain’s challenge for the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport off to a flying start with a dominant victory in today’s Feature Race at Circuit Park Zandvoort, The Netherlands.

Following a strong drive in the earlier Sprint Race which saw him net a 7th placed finish, the Cambridgeshire driver proved to be the class of the field in the main race. Jarvis’s Feature Race started to unfold when the 20 year old, who started 3rd, pulled of a spectacular overtaking manoeuvre on Team Germany’s Christian Vietoris, moving up into 2nd position on lap 4 and quickly catching the lead car of South Africa’s Adrian Zaugg.

The team brought Oliver into the pits as soon as the first pit-stop window opened on lap eight and superb work by the crew gave him a crucial advantage. He took the lead after South Africa’s pit-stop and managed to build a cushion to his nearest rivals which he maintained through to the second pit stop and onwards to the chequered flag. The win is the team’s fourth in A1GP, having taken three victories on the way to third place overall in the series standings in 2006/07.

Earlier in the day Oliver had made up three places in the sprint race to finish seventh, passing Portugal at the start and then overtaking New Zealand and Ireland before finishing just 0.222 seconds behind sixth placed Germany. The team now heads to Brno, Czech Republic, second in the standings with 19 points, nine behind current leaders South Africa who won the today’s Sprint Race and finished in the Feature Race.

Oliver Jarvis: "That’s the start to the year I was anticipating before we came here! It was a fantastic race – though very tough physically and mentally. I didn’t get the best of starts but managed to dive down the inside and get back past Neel Jani (A1 Team SUI) into corner one.

And after that it was a case of pressurizing Germany who I knew were a lot slower than us and managed to pull off an overtaking move down the inside – that really made the race for me.

The team made all the right pit stop calls – we pitted as soon as the first pit stop window opened and then pushed hard to close the gap and try to jump South Africa which we achieved. I got my head down as it was then a case of controlling the race and making sure I didn’t make any mistakes.

It’s a special win for me with my whole family here, but for the team it’s a great start to the season. I’m going home a very happy man!"

Katie Clements; Team Principal: "A fantastic result for the team and a great start to our championship challenge. It was always going to be tough in the sprint from 10th on the grid but Olly drive very well to gain the places he did.

The feature saw plenty of action and our race pace and pit work were first class. With new commercial partners joining the team we’re also overjoyed to score a victory and gain exposure for them, as well as being a fitting tribute to the late Colin McRae."
