A1 Team Brazsil to evaluate young drivers at Snetterton test

06.08.2007: A1 Team Brazsil to evaluate young drivers at Snetterton test

A1 Team Brazil will begin its preparations for the 2007/08 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport at the Snetterton circuit in England, on 14 and 15 August, when it will evaluate two young Brazilian drivers at the series’ official rookie test session.

Sergio Jiménez and Clemente Faria Jr will be getting their first taste of the 3.4 litre, 520bhp A1GP car at the British track as part of the team’s pre-season driver evaluation programme.

Most recently, the Sao Paulo born Jiménez has been competing in this year’s GP2 Series, in which he raced in Bahrain, Barcelona and Monaco for the Racing Engineering team. The highlight for the 23-year-old was his brace of points-scoring finishes in the Barcelona races.

His career began with a highly-successful eight years in karting, before he moved up to Brazilian Formula Renault in 2002, a series that he subsequently won in his debut season. He moved to the British Formula Renault series the following year, and then returned to karting until 2005. He returned to European racing in 2006 to enter the Spanish F3 Championship, in which he finished fifth.

Faria Jr is currently dominating the South American F3 Championship. He joined the series a few races into the 2006 season, stealing two race wins, two poles and six further podiums, before launching a serious assault on the series in 2007.

The 19-year-old comes from Belo Horizonte and is seen as one of Brazil’s brightest young talents. Prior to his entry into Formula Three, Clemente enjoyed a successful nine-year career in karting, winning six championship trophies.

Sergio Jiménez: "I’m really happy to have been given this opportunity and I hope that it will end in me being involved with the team during the race season. I have some experience with the GP2 car as I did three race weekends and some tests, and the A1GP car is nearly the same in terms of power, so I don’t think it will be a problem for me. I just need to learn how the series and team work, get comfortable in the car and do a good job."

Clemente Faria Jr: "Brasil has dozens of good young drivers, so to be picked to represent my country makes me feel very honoured. I know it will be a huge challenge to drive a car with almost two times the horsepower of an F3, but I also know that Emerson and the rest of the team will help me. For sure there are other rookies, like Sergio Jiménez, with experience of cars with more than 500bhp, and I will have to adapt quickly to make up for that. I’m really looking forward to getting in the car at Snetterton."

Emerson Fittipaldi, Team Principal: "I’m really pleased that we have this opportunity to test Sergio and Clemente at Snetterton. Both of them are well-respected young talents, and I am glad that I am in a position to be able to give them a shot at this. Clemente is very young but has shown great talent so far whereas Sergio has the more experience of the two, having driven GP2 this year.

Both have shown a lot of promise and have been extremely successful in go-karting in Brasil, so I look forward to seeing how they perform in the A1GP car."
