David Garza ready for China

05.11.2008: David Garza ready for China

The young Mexican driver arrived today into Chengdu to take the command of the A1 Team Mexico car for its season debut this weekend

The young Mexican Racing star, David Garza was announced last week as the official driver for A1 Team Mexico for A1GP’s season 4. Garza has committed to be the lead driver for all the races of this season and thinking of this he started his preparation two weeks ago in Europe.

David had almost zero seat time during the last two months before going to Europe due to a hip injury that kept him out of the car for 5 of the last 6 races of the Atlantics Series season where he raced for Forsythe Racing. After his recovery David only came back for Atlantic’s season finale at Road Atlanta on October 3rd where he had a good run to finish 6th.

But besides this, he hadn’t been in a car for more than 60 days, so as soon as he was chosen to drive for A1 Team Mexico at the World Cup of Motorsports, he decided to go to Europe looking to gain some miles driving a race car before his debut this weekend in Chengdu. His first stop was the F3000 EuroSeries race at the famous and former F1 circuit in Jerez where he finished 6th the first race and astonished everybody on the second race by winning it with a gap of more than 18 seconds to second place.

David defeated important racers like Fabio Onidi, Nicolas Prost, Felipe Guimarães or Adam Kahn in only his second race in this competitive series. After his impressive performance he immediately got invitations to test in GP2 (Fisichella Motorsports) and Super League, but David’s A1 commitments come first so he putted the invitations on standby and continued to his second stop of his original plan.

From Jerez Garza flew to Modena, Italy to take a couple of sessions on the brand new A1 simulator where he again impressed with his skills. In just one session the Mexican driver set the second fastest time on the Sepang circuit, just 2 tenths behind Albuquerque’s lap record and improving the times of well known and experienced drivers as Neel Jani.

Now David is already in China waiting anxiously for his debut where he expects to earn at least a Top 8th result just to start with the right foot a season where he pretends to be a strong contender.

"I am thrilled with this challenge. I can’t wait to jump into the car. It is a really beautiful race car. I had the chance to see it last week at Silverstone and I was very impressed not only by the looks, but also by the performance. It is really fast, it has lots of down force, and it has carbon brakes, so I am already enjoying it" Garza said.

"It is a big step but I am ready for it. Although I come from a smaller car, I think the Atlantic Series is a great school and it has proven it. There are a lot of guys that race or raced with me over there in the States that are doing or did well here. Wickens, Hinchcliffe, Matos, Summerton, Morad, just to name a few, had shown things here, so I know I can do this" he assured.

"Last year we arrived at the middle of the season, with no previous testing and to be honest, without the best package (car/team/experience) out there. This season we don’t have those big disadvantages. I think we have a better package overall and the rest of the teams and drivers only had been with this car for one race and one test at the most, so that will help as well" he emphasized.

"I mean if under the conditions we were last year, we managed to get a couple of top 10 finishes (9th in New Zealand and 8th in South Africa), I don’t see why we cannot expect to be there (in the Top 10) every race and why not fight for the Top 5’s and the podiums several times during the season. I am ready and can’t wait to go out and prove it" he finalized.
