Esteban Gutierrez, current champion of the Formula BMW Europe, who has been selected as rookie driver for the Mexican A1GP team for the next race in New Zealand, had a great performance during the whole weekend of the Formula BMW World Final that was carried out in the historic Hermanos Rodriguez racetrack in Mexico City.
Esteban started out on Sunday with second place during the third and final qualifying heat. This result, added to those obtained during the two previous heats, gave him the Pole Position for the World Final. However, in the race, at the start, he lost the first position and was strongly attacked by the driver in third place, which caused him to focus on trying to maintain his position before being able to seek the first.
A few laps later he was able to distance himself from third place and keeped the pace with the leader of the race. Gutierrez maintained a fast pace during the whole race, always keeping himself within the first three places, very close to the lead. When the checkered flag was waved, he crossed the finish line in third position, thus closing a great performance during the whole weekend on the podium.
"I feel happy with what we achieved during the weekend and with the final result; this has been an event in which I've learned a lot. It's the first time I live through situations like this, racing in the presence of the people in my country, and I feel very grateful with all the people that came to root for me," said the Mexican driver after the race.
Now, the young 17-year-old will take a well-deserved break in his native city of Monterrey in Mexico, before returning to the activities to face a new challenge in his career debuting as a rookie driver for Mexican A1GP team in Taupo, New Zealand, from January 23rd to January 25th, 2009.
