FIA GT3 – Round 6: Dubai

Only two weeks after the FIA GT season’s finale in San Luis (Argentina), the FIA GT3 European Championship ended its season in Dubai, Middle East. Prospeed Competition ran two Porsche 911 GT3 Cup S in the finals of the European Championship, one for Stéphane Lémeret - David Loix and one for Franz Lamot – Rudi Penders. But where sunshine and Dubai are supposed to be almost synonymous, this time rain spoiled the entire second day of the meeting. Race 1 took place in perfect conditions, but 24 hours later the teams were forced to stay on the sideline.

The last meeting of the FIA GT3 took place in Dubai in the Middle East. Day 1 of the meeting was held on Friday as for religious reasons no races are held on a Sunday.

Unfortunately the weather refused to co-operate on the second day; a torrential storm on Friday night left parts of the circuit underwater. Despite the best efforts of the organisers the volume of flood water was simply too great to be cleared in time for Saturday’s racing to be held, and with great reluctance the last round of the Championship had to be cancelled.

"It’s a pity that we have to end the season this way", Rudi Penders explains. "It has been a great event so far, just like in Argentina. The grandstands were crowded, the ambiance was great and there were animations all over the paddock. The local promoters of the event were sure to get even more people to the track on Saturday, so this cancellation really is a shame…"

ProSpeed Competition, like all the others, only drove one race, "but it wasn’t the race we had planned for…", Rudi Penders continues. David Loix took the start, but a race incident with a Ford GT slowed him down. Despite the incident, his team mate Stéphane Lémeret still finished in a good tenth position overall.

In the second ProSpeed Competition Porsche 911 GT3 Cup S, it was Rudi Penders who took the start of the race. He was slowed down after an off with another Porsche. Franz Lamot took over the wheel in 31st spot and managed to regain some places, finally finishing in 24th position.

"The FIA GT3 season 2008 has been very nice", Rudi Penders summarizes. "The ‘Balance of Power’ is good, but the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup S is still at a disadvantage. Marc Basseng, certainly a very quick Porsche driver was one of the drivers here in Dubai, and he was still one second off the pace. In qualifying no less than five different makes were faster than the Porsche. I believe that a solution has to be found."

"For ProSpeed Competition it was a première, with new tracks, a new competition and finally David Loix got into the top-10 of the championship with two podium places, a fair result I guess."

ProSpeed Competition will return to Dubai in only a few weeks time for the fourth edition of the 24 Hours of Dubai on the 8th, 9th and 10th of January.
