Super Nova Qatar Qualifying

13.02.2009: The International circuit of Qatar will be host to the 4th round of the 2008-2009 GP2 Asia Series. This will be the first night race for GP2 Asia Series and will be a challenge for the team and the drivers.

The International circuit of Qatar will be host to the 4th round of the 2008-2009 GP2 Asia Series. This will be the first night race for GP2 Asia Series and will be a challenge for the team and the drivers.

In hot dusty desert conditions the Super Nova duo quickly proved that they are capable of setting quick times. Javier ran new tyres to start and was provisionally 4th on the grid before returning to the pit lane for minor changes. He returned to the track on a second set of tyres, unfortunately just as he started a flying lap, the session was red flagged. At the re-start there was only 3 and a half minutes left to run which meant just one flying lap for all the drivers. It was a very intense 3 and a half minutes with Javier doing a superb job, jumping to 4th position with his lap, unfortunately dropping to 7th as other drivers completed their flying laps.

James seemed to struggle with learning the circuit as quickly as other drivers and when the qualifying session was red flagged he was in 20th position. At the re-start James did a fantastic lap and jumped to 11th position, which in the circumstances, was a sterling effort.

Team Principal David Sears was happy with the days’ outcome and is hoping that the race pace of both drivers and race strategy from the team will bring both drivers into point scoring positions.

James Jakes: “I didn’t get enough laps on the second set of tyres, I was hoping for a better result but hopefully tomorrow will be better and we can get into the top eight.”

Javier Villa:
“It was an interesting qualifying, first because we were 9th, you cant see well, its similar to if you are in a room, it’s black. The first part we were P3, in the second part I had a little traffic and then it was red flagged. All the drivers only had one lap, you know that if you make a mistake you will be last. I qualified 7th, in the race we can go to the front.”
