Strakka Racing completes two-day test at new Algarve circuit

The first test of the LMP1 Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S proved every bit as successful as that of its LMP2 counterpart the week before. Now, with more Zyteks appearing in the Le Mans Series than ever, the year looks particularly promising for the Repton-based operation.

New customer Strakka Racing took delivery of the latest Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S/1 at Portugal’s new Algarve circuit last week.  Newly announced signing Danny Watts did the majority of the running on the Tuesday, with team regulars Peter Hardman and Nick Leventis completing around 20 laps each.  Wednesday saw Peter and Nick take over and, by the end of the test, the GZ09S/1 had completed nearly 1000km of trouble free running.

“I really enjoyed it,” said Peter. “The overall dynamics of the car still work extremely well despite the recent rule changes and the engine performance has improved even further since I first drove a Ginetta-Zytek at Valencia last year. As team manager I was delighted to see how well the Strakka Racing and Zytek Engineering operations worked well together. I can’t wait for the official LMS testing at Paul Ricard.”

Nick echoed his thoughts. “It was very encouraging to see how well everyone from Strakka and Zytek gelled. The car was very responsive, showing great consistency and working well with the Michelin tyres. It was a joy to drive.”

Danny has significant experience with Zytek machinery, and as Nick says “his input was vital” having raced an LMP2 Zytek 07S in 2007 and a development LMP1 Ginetta-Zytek 07S at Petit Le Mans last year.  Despite the rule changes he reported that the car remained well balanced and easy to drive, indicating that Zytek has managed to redress the imbalance created by the 2009 ACO regulations particularly the rear wing width reduction.

“For a first run it was very encouraging,” reported Zytek Engineering managing director Trevor Foster. “The car ran trouble free and behaved extremely well over a full two days of testing.”

2009 will be Strakka Racing’s first year in Prototypes and opting for the tried and tested Zytek package seems to have paid early dividends for this promising team. The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve provided the perfect opportunity for Nick and Peter to become properly acquainted with their new machine, the weather stayed fine throughout the test and there were no technical issues, enabling Strakka Racing to complete a large amount of running.  The success of the initial test will provide a perfect foundation for what will no doubt be an exciting season for Strakka Racing and Zytek Motorsport.
