My Qi Meritus.Mahara’s Bonanomi to mentor Indonesia’s rising stars

26.03.2009: My Qi Meritus.Mahara GP2 Asia driver Marco Bonanomi has returned to Indonesia, his favourite holiday destination, to prepare for his assault at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) next weekend.

My Qi Meritus.Mahara GP2 Asia driver Marco Bonanomi has returned to Indonesia, his favourite holiday destination, to prepare for his assault at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) next weekend.

The Italian driver is seeking his first points of the season after joining the team midway though the championship. The fifth round of this season’s GP2 Asia is from April 3-5 while the last leg is in Bahrain from April 17-19.

“I love coming to Indonesia as it is a beautiful place to visit,” said Bonanomi. “I wanted to arrive in this region early as I’m determined to do well in Sepang, which is the team’s home race.

“Meritus have been on the GP2 Asia podium once this season and I’m determined to emulate Earl Bamber’s feat of finishing inside the top three in the coming races.”

My Qi Meritus.Mahara are eighth in the GP2 Asia team standings with eight points after four rounds.

While in Indonesia, Bonanomi will also spend some time with Meritus’ Formula BMW Pacific drivers Dustin Sofyan and Rio Haryanto.

The two Indonesians, who are 14- and 16-years-old respectively, will spearhead Meritus’ challenge in the Formula BMW, a championship the Malaysian team have dominated the last six years.

“Their first race of the new season will also be during the Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix. As I have raced in Sepang before, I will help them by giving them tips on what to expect during race day,” said Bonanomi.

“It is a great responsibility but we are all team mates, albeit, in different championships. Who know, they could be taking over from me in a few years time.”

Meritus are Asia’s most successful team with 32 international titles in the past 12 years, including the last six Formula BMW team titles.

Their drivers such as Narain Kartikeyan, Takuma Sato, Earl Bamber, Jazeman Jaafar and Ross Jamison have all won the Formula BMW drivers' title while Narain and Takuma graduated to Formula 1.

Dustin, who is a big fan of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher, said: “I’m happy Meritus have asked such an established driver like Marco to give me some pointers.

“I know they want to start the Formula BMW season on a right foot as it is at their home ground. I will do my best to live up to expectations.”
