Vitaly Petrov victorious, great race for Sergio Pérez

06.04.2009: We witnessed a spectacular race from the Barwa Campos Team drivers today at the Malaysian circuit of Sepang with Vitaly Petrov driving his way to victory and Sergio Pérez, with a superb drive getting into the points after lining up as one of the backstart

We witnessed a spectacular race from the Barwa Campos Team drivers today at the Malaysian circuit of Sepang with Vitaly Petrov driving his way to victory and Sergio Pérez, with a superb drive getting into the points after lining up as one of the backstarters.

The track was very wet and difficult after having received torrential rain. Under the circumstances the race had to start behind the safety car for three laps. With the drivers forced to maintain their starting positions behind the safety car it meant the Barwa Campos Team drivers would lose the chance to make ground on their rivals from the start.

Vitaly began the race from third position and on the fifth lap he was able to get past Valsechi and move into second place with his sights firmly set on winning the race. On the tenth lap after a tough battle with the then leader Maldonado, Petrov was finally able to get past him and from then on took control of the race. Vitaly managed to pull away from his rivals, including a fastest lap time. Once he had built up a comfortable lead, he dedicated the rest of the race controlling the differences and made the whole thing look very easy right up to the chequered flag.

The youngest driver in the race, Segio Pérez started from 22nd position on the grid due to the engine failure he had yesterday which forced him out of the first race. Right from the start he seemed determined to try the impossible and get into the points despite the fact that this is the shorter of the two races run this weekend. On the sixth lap he had already moved up to eleventh place after having overtaken half the field, in what were tricky conditions.

With just three laps to go, he moved up to seventh after yet another brilliant overtaking move and the last lap, where he was fighting it out for sixth and points against the overall leader of the Series, was truly memorable. Sergio with a last gasp finish was able to get past his rival just before the finish line. One point seems small reward for such an impressive performance but this point may still be important at the end of the season, when we look at the final classifications.

In the race for the drivers title, Vitaly, after his great victory, has moved up to third position overall and Sergio remains sixth overall, just one point behind the two drivers ahead of him in the championship and only two points off the third placed driver. In the constructor´s championship, Barwa Campos Team has consolidated its second position overall, with a view to making a final assault for the team title in the last races of the season in Bahrein. As is usual in GP2 championships, anything could happen so we are guaranteed a thrilling finish to the campaign.

Vitaly Petrov.
“In the end it´s been a good weekend, even though yesterday I wasn´t able to drive the race I wanted because of brake problems. All the good work that we have carried out this week has been compensated by this result and I would like to thank the team for their support and help. The race wasn´t easy, due to driving conditions on the track but I kept my head and maintained my concentration without making any mistakes nor taking any risks. Let´s see if in Bahrein we can keep up this level we have been showing in the last few races and pull off the feat of winning the championship. I´m in the mood to give it a real go.

Sergio Pérez:
“I think we did a great race today. Starting from as far back as we did, one point was the most we could hope for and we managed it. It´s a shame that we haven´t had much luck in general this weekend. This makes up a little for the disappointment after yesterday´s race. I´m really looking forward to the last race weekend to try hard and demonstrate the good work done and the progress we have made throughout the whole of this championship”

Hamad Ali Al-Athba,
public relation specialist and representative of BARWA to the GP2 2009 series, commented: “An incredible race. I thank all team members for a perfect car drive which helped keep us ahead of our rivals. I am not only happy for myself but also for BARWA and the entire team.”
