Local racer enjoys Brands Hatch challenge

Kent racer, Aaron Steele, had his first chance to drive the powerful A1GP Powered by Ferrari car of A1 Team Great Britain today and with previous experience of his local circuit, he enjoyed his outing. He handed over the car to main driver, Dan Clarke for the afternoon practice session with the British driver posting 10th quickest lap

The A1GP series makes its final stop of the season at the Brands Hatch circuit and with the title chase still being fought by Switzerland, Portugal and Ireland, the British event is set to be full of excitement. Clarke is making his third appearance for A1 Team Great Britain, having previously driven at the Taupo, New Zealand and Algarve, Portugal events.

Rookie driver Steele had his first chance to drive the A1GP car during the Friday Rookie sessions. The young driver, a finalist for this year’s Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award, showed consistent pace during the session and spent time learning the car and enjoying the most powerful car he had ever driven.

Steele commented after the rookie sessions, “Driving an A1GP car is like straddling a rocket ship and hanging on by the reins. It was really good and I really enjoyed it. It was literally like pressing a time warp button with that throttle, it’s just so responsive. The amount of G-force and aerodynamic down force it generates is something I have never experienced before so it was all new to me and I had to take it all in my stride, it is certainly the most powerful car I’ve ever driven so I spent time adjusting to the change in speed.

“I think a really good thing and an encouraging thing is that by the end of the session I really was starting to feel comfortable. A1GP is such a high level of motorsport and it’s such a great experience for me to be involved in this weekend, I’d love to be involved in the future. I think we had two good sessions today and hopefully I’ve done a good job and impressed the team.”

Clarke began his preparations for Sunday’s two A1GP races this afternoon and was running comfortably within the top ten throughout the session.

Clarke said of his first time in the A1GP car at Brands,”I learned a lot in the session, but there’s more time in me and I can see that, so we know what to work on. Of course it’s Sunday when it matters.  The GP section is really fun, there’s so many fast corners, and original corners and there’s so much downforce on this car you feel you can really attack them. It’s a circuit you drive round with a bit of a smile on your face the whole time.”
The A1GP Brands Hatch, Great Britain, continues tomorrow with final practice and qualifying for Sunday’s races.
