Magnificent Mortara scores maiden GP2 win for Telmex Arden International

Edoardo Mortara targeted a podium finish in this morning’s GP2 Series sprint race at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya – but he fared even better than he had dared to expect. From third on the grid, the young Italian grabbed an immediate lead and went on to withstand fierce pressure from championship leader Romain Grosjean once the Franco-Swiss had worked his way into second place. Mortara did not put a wheel wrong, however, and went on to complete a memorable first GP2 success.

From 14th on the grid, team-mate Sergio Perez made a fine start and swiftly moved up to ninth place, but he lost time with a spin at Turn 13 and slipped to an eventual 17th.

Edoardo:

“When I crossed the finishing line I just thought, ‘Oh my God…’ I made a brilliant start, passed the two front-row guys straight away and then pushed hard to stay out of trouble. The first few laps were OK. I tried to preserve my tyres when Giedo van der Garde was behind me, then Romain Grosjean moved up to second and I started to push again to build a gap.

It was really quite difficult, but I was able to maintain my advantage. It is hard not to destroy your tyres when you are following another driver and I think it was easier for me to get away than it was for him to stay on my tail. He raced well, though, and pushed me hard. I made one small mistake that almost allowed him to pass, but I was able to defend my position. During the final five laps he made an error and I decided to push as hard as I could to increase my lead. It’s my first GP2 victory with Arden and I feel so very, very happy. This has also given me a lot more confidence that I’m sure will serve me well in future races.”

Sergio:

“This has been quite a disappointing weekend – and not what we expected at all. Yesterday’s result put me in a difficult position for today, but I am not one to give up. The race quickly settled down and not much really happened before I tried to pass Nico Hülkenberg, when I made a mistake that led to a time-consuming spin. I’m looking forward to Monaco, though, where I’m sure I’ll be very competitive.”
