No joy for Arden on Monte Carlo’s pitiless streets

22.05.2009: Telmex Arden International drivers Edoardo Mortara and Sergio Perez garnered valuable experience during this morning’s GP2 Series feature race in Monaco, but flickers of promise ultimately yielded no reward.

Telmex Arden International drivers Edoardo Mortara and Sergio Perez garnered valuable experience during this morning’s GP2 Series feature race in Monaco, but flickers of promise ultimately yielded no reward.

Perez suffered a damaged front wing during the early stages of the race, and with bodywork rubbing on a tyre he was obliged to pit for repairs. He rejoined ahead of leaders Romain Grosjean and Vitaly Petrov, who took some time to catch the fleet Mexican, but ultimately the time lost proved too much of a handicap and Perez was classified 12th of only 16 finishers.

Team-mate Edoardo Mortara kept his nose clean during the opening laps and moved up from 18th to ninth. With 10 laps to go, however, he lost a potential points finish – and the chance of a spot on the front row for tomorrow’s sprint race grid – when he collided with rival Alvaro Parente and sustained suspension damage that caused him to slide into the barrier at the hairpin exit.

Edoardo: “I wanted to finish in the top eight, but knew that would be difficult from 18th on the grid. I was prepared to push a lot and made a really good start, passing two or three cars, but saw some tyre smoke when I reached the first corner. Several drivers ahead were cutting the corner and I followed them, because it seemed the best way to avoid a potential collision.

The car felt consistent and reasonably quick in the race. After a good pit stop I raced hard against Alvaro Parente, Karun Chandhok and Jérôme d’Ambrosio. I knew I was moving ever closer to a points finish, but towards the end of the race I tried to pass Parente for eighth place and our cars touched, which bent my front-left suspension. That made steering almost impossible and I was unable to get around the hairpin, which rather sums up the frustrating nature of my weekend so far.”

Sergio: “That was really disappointing. I made contact with Karun Chandhok on the first lap and it ruined my race. I had a punctured tyre and my front wing was damaged, so I had to come in before the pit window and was thus obliged to make two stops. I tried to push to the limit after that, because you don’t know what might happen around Monaco, but I’m disappointed not to have finished in the points. I hope we can find a bit more time in the car for tomorrow’s race – and that’s all we need to be competitive.”
