GP2 2009 Championship Monaco Race One  Friday 22nd May 2009

Javier Villa successfully completed today’s GP2 street race, gaining three positions to pass the chequered flag 8th. This should have earned him pole position for Saturday’s race, but unfortunately it was the stewards’ decision to penalise him along with others that cut the first chicane at the beginning of the race, to avoid a pile up. This means the team’s Spanish racer will now start from tenth for tomorrows race.

The race got underway at 1115hrs this morning. Romain Grosjean ( Barwa Addax Team) stormed away at the lights to lead for the entire race, hotly pursued by team mate Vitaly Petrov, to finally make it a 1-2 result for Barwa Addax Team today.

A brilliant pit stop from Super Nova, saw Luca Filippi come out ahead, chasing David Rigon, in effective sixth position. Trident left Rigon out until the closing laps, holding up the team’s Italian. Finally with clear space ahead of him, Luca pulled away to close in on Andreas Zuber, but unfortunately pushed too hard, & clipped the kerb at the final corner ending his hopes of finishing in the points this morning. He will start from 20th for tomorrows’ short race.

Javier Villa had a coming together as several cars squeezed through the tight hairpin corner, breaking his front wing. With just 9 laps remaining, Javi drove his car home despite the cars injuries.

Team Principal David Sears
“Both our drivers looked set to finish in the points, with Luca Filippi running strong 6th place, being held up for a long time by David Rigon. After Rigon finally pitted, Luca started to push really hard, but unfortunately went off, ending his race and scoring no points.

Javier Villa lost some time in his pit stop, but came back strongly and finishing eighth, starting from the front for tomorrows reverse grid. Hopefully we can get a good result from this tomorrow.”

A disappointed Luca Filippi said
“it’s a big shame because I was feeling so confident, the car was getting quicker, and I think my last lap would have been my quickest. But I made a little mistake, and I’m sorry to the team, as we could have collected some points today.”

Javier Villa said
“We lost a little time in the pit stop, but we were still P8! In free air the car was really quick today, but unfortunately I’ve been put back for cutting the first corner, even though we didn’t gain from it. ”
