Neel Jani tops the time sheets at Silverstone

The Swiss A1GP team has successfully completed its preparations for the second round of the season at Chengdu, China, November 9th. Neel Jani dominantly topped the time sheets in testing at Silverstone's short circuit.

"It was our goal to get used to the new car", said Jani, who had been driving the car of team Pakistan in the season opener of the World Cup of Motorsport at Zandvoort, early October, as the chassis allocated to Switzerland wasn't available at the time. "At Silverstone, we have tested the reaction of the car to various changes in the set-up and we have learned a lot while doing so", said team principal Max Welti. "I am considering the good lap times as a pleasant side-effect."

Jani was by far the fastest driver of the seven drivers who were out on the circuit. At the only 2.63 kilometres long track, he outpaced Portuguese driver Filipe Albuquerque by 0.371 seconds. France, Brazil, China, that had two drivers out, and Korea, were even further down. "I am feeling quite comfortable in the car already", said a happy Jani.

"Ferrari has done a good job. Compared to the Lola car that we used previously, we have considerably more downforce and better brakes."

Neel Jani estimates that the performance of the cars is now in between those of the GP2 series and Formula 1. Lap times at the unusually short "National Circuit" at Silverstone, which only has five corners, have been reduced by some 2.5 seconds compared to August, 2007, although conditions with low temperatures and rain at times were far from ideal. A planned run with full tanks at the end of the session had to be cancelled do to a hailstorm.

On Monday next week, the Swiss team will head for China. The rookie driver of the defending champions will be Alexandre Imperatori, who is familiar with the circuits in Asia.

Standings World Cup of Motorsport (2/20): 1. Malaysia 22. 2. France 22. 3. New Zealand 18. 4. Netherlands 11. 5. Australia 8. 6. Monaco 5. 7. Switzerland 4. 8. Korea 4. 9. South Africa 3. 10. USA and Libanon 3. 12. Italy 2. 13. China 2.
