Dakar Rally 2014
Stage 12 El Salvador to La Serena
January 17th, 2014

12:48 Bikes: Top 5: Despres gains a place in the general standings

Behind Cyril Despres, Marc Coma and Olivier Pain, Helder Rodrigues is in provisional fourth place, 7’21' behind the day’s winner who is also his main rival for fifth place in the general standings.

Indeed, the Frenchman now occupies this place with a lead of 6’38'. Jordi Viladoms finishes fifth, 9’10' behind Despres.

12:45 Bikes: Barreda in slow motion

The Spanish Honda rider is slowly making progress along the special stage holding on to his steering head. He tried to make repairs more than an hour ago, but it evidently was not sufficient.

He is now in the dunes and is having more and more difficulty finding the Way Points (compulsory points of passage).

The end of the stage looks to be a difficult one for the occupant of second place in the general standings Will he make it to the finishing line?

12:35 Bikes: Despres wins!

With a time of 3:58’18' Cyril Despres has won the day’s special, 2’17” ahead of Marc Coma. Olivier Pain trails his countryman by 5’53', but will he keep hold of third place?

12:30 Bikes: Despres is first to finish

Frenchman Cyril Despres has crossed the finishing line first, very closely followed by Marc Coma. For the moment, the two men have taken the top two places, but in light of their last-minute detour to find a waypoint, this result requires confirmation

12:06 Bikes: About turn for Despres and Coma

With the finish in sight, the two stage leaders are riding together, but they have missed a Way Point (a compulsory point of passage) which would entail a major time penalty. As a result, they have turned back to find this point, before resuming the normal direction towards the finishing line.

11:52 Bikes: Rodrigues catches Pain after 267 km

In third and fourth, the two bikers have constantly changed place since the start. This time, it is Helder Rodrigues who holds the advantage, with a lead of 45' over Olivier Pain.

The Portuguese rider is 2’24' behind stage leader Cyril Despres who is riding with Marc Coma out in front. The leader of the general standings is 2’14' behind Despres.

Behind them, Viladoms trails Despres by 8’25' and David Casteu is eighth, 7’55' behind his countryman, the stage leader.

11:38 Bikes: Mechanical trouble for Barreda

The Spanish biker is trying to repair his Honda after 264 km of the special. He is approximately 25 km from the leading group. The cause of his problems is as yet unknown.

10:50 Bikes: Pain ahead of Rodrigues after 200 km

Currently, the French Yamaha rider is in second place 2’14' behind his countryman and team-mate Cyril Despres. Helder Rodrigues lies 2’17' behind the stage leader. Marc Coma is in fourth, 2’33' behind Despres. Jordi Viladoms has lost almost 6’30 of his lead in the general standings over Olivier Pain.

10:11 Bikes: Casteu still going after 134 km

With a broken collar bone, David Casteu has promised himself that he will finish this Dakar and he is looking well set to do so. The Frenchman is in a fine ninth place, in light of his physical circumstances, 3’46' behind the quickest riders.

09:34 Bikes: Despres leads at CP2 after 90 km

Cyril Despres has completed 90 km with a lead of 29' over Helder Rodrigues, the Portuguese rider having led the race since the start of the special. Marc Coma is third, 1’17' behind Despres, Olivier Pain is 1’41' behind his countryman and Jordi Viladoms is 5’41' behind the current stage leader.
