The Electric GT Championship, the world’s first 100% zero-emissions GT championship, is delighted to welcome Stephen Cox into the EGT Drivers’ Club.

American racing veteran Cox has a vast amount of motorsports experience and is impressed by how forward thinking and innovative the Electric GT Championship is.

Cox becomes the 11th member of the Drivers’ Club, joining Stefan Wilson, Vicky Piria, Dani Clos, Leilani Munter, Tom Coronel, Alice Powell, Tom Onslow-Cole, Ricardo Teixeira, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Kevin Ceccon, with an eventual 20 drivers being chosen to race the all-new Tesla Model S P100D.

Born and raised in the heart of American racing, Indianapolis, Cox (@SopwithTV) has a number of race wins and championship titles across several disciplines and was made a Mitsubishi USA factory test driver.

Alongside his racing, Cox is the CEO of Sopwtih Motorsport Television Productions, which provides motorsport programming from a number of national networks including NBC, Discovery and Fox Sports. He has also written several books and hosts numerous motorsports-related TV shows.

Stephen Cox said: "It's an honour to be invited to drive with a major international sports car series. The motor racing landscape is changing rapidly and Electric GT is at the front of the pack.

They are bridging the gap between traditional motor racing and the future of the sport. The series’ leadership is strong and forward thinking. That’s what drew my attention in the first place.

"I was badly injured in an on-board racing fire last season. As a burn survivor, I'm really attracted to the concept of a racing car that does not rely on liquid fuels. The safety aspect of electric racing is tremendously important to me and a big step forward for the industry.

"I really appreciate Mark Gemmell and Agustin Paya bringing me on board, and want to witness the changes EGT brings to motorsport first hand. I’d like to help bring the series across the ocean and tap into the American market.

I'm anxious to represent my personal sponsors, Impact Racing and Boschett Timepieces, internationally. This is an exciting time to be a racing driver."

Electric GT Championship CEO Mark Gemmell added: “I’m very happy to be welcoming Stephen to the EGT Drivers’ Club. He has experience in a range of series and has demonstrated his motorsport’s knowledge in the work he has done off the track.

He is extremely passionate about the series, which is excellent, and I really look forward to working with him.”

On 12-15 January, the EGT Championship will be presented at the world-famous Autosport International and will be on show in the Live Action Arena. For more information on EGT’s involvement at the show, head over to www.autosportinternational.com.

The EGT Championship will consist of 20 international drivers, both male and female, racing for 10 professional teams in identical Tesla Model S machines equipped with the latest OMP safety equipment and running on bespoke Pirelli tyres.

EGT will visit seven classic European circuits in its inaugural season, including Paul Ricard, Barcelona, Assen, Estoril and the Nürburgring, before staging three non-championship races in the Americas.
