ABOUT BRAGA

Braga is a city and municipality situated in the historical and cultural Portuguese province of Minho. With a population of nearly 200,000, Braga is the seventh largest city in Portugal and with an area of 183.40 km2 it is the third-largest urban centre in Portugal after Lisbon and Porto.

Located between mountains, forests, grand valleys, plains and fields, Braga is surrounded by natural beauty.

The history of Braga can be traced back to Roman times with Bracara Augusta, the Roman name for the city, being founded by the Emperor Augustus.  It was an important part of the empire being located on one of the main roads in the Iberian Peninsula and was the capital of the province of Gallaecia.

In the Middle Ages Braga continued to be an important centre for commerce and the city Cathedral is one of the oldest in Portugal, built in the 12th Century by the parents of Portugal’s first King.

Today Braga is a popular university city and is renowned for its lively night life and wide variety of restaurants.
