Formula Renault 2.0 - BILBAO - Ammermüller back to winning ways

16.07.2005: Formula Renault 2.0 - BILBAO - Ammermüller back to winning ways

After taking his fifth victory in seven races, Michael Ammermüller (Jenzer Motorsport) consolidated his lead in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 overall standings. The German finished ahead of Frenchman Yann Clairay (SG Formula) and Belgian driver Bertrand Baguette, sporting the colours of the local team, Epsilon Euskadi!

For safety reasons, the race got underway behind the safety car. Michael Ammermüller immediately got the better of Yann Clairay, himself pressed by Bertrand Baguette and Adrian Zaugg (Jenzer Motorsport) right from the first chicane.

Clairay managed to pull away a little bit, allowing Filipe Albuquerque (Motopark Oschersleben) to catch up to Baguette and Zaugg. In sixth place, every move made by Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula) was shadowed by Kamui Kobayashi (Prema Power Team), who spotted a gap and went through it on the 3rd lap! David Oberle (Team Jenzer) was the first on the list of drivers forced to abandon.

Lap 4 was witness to a violent crash involving Sergei Afanasiev (Lukoil Racing Team), who ran into the wall and then rebounded onto the track, and Dani Clos (Pons Racing), who then proceeded to run into him. The safety car was brought out onto the track straight away and stayed out until the end of the sixth lap.

There were only two minutes left at the restart, so the race finished after eight laps. Michael Ammermüller took his fifth win of the season, whilst Yann Clairay scored some precious points. Bertrand Baguette gave his Epsilon Euskadi team their first podium finish on home soil!

Michael Ammermüller: «A rolling start is actually much easier to deal with than a standing start. It's difficult to make a mistake with them! The crowd is really great here, people seem happy to have motor racing in the streets of their city.»

Yann Clairay: «This race wasn't very difficult as we didn't have many laps to cover in the end. But the most important thing is to make it onto the podium and to get some serious points on the board for the Eurocup.»

Bertrand Baguette: «We have been chasing this first podium finish since the start of the season, so it's very special for the team to achieve that here. I hope I can do even better tomorrow!»
