The 2011 GP2 Asia Series was finally back underway today at Abu Dhabi. On the Yas Marina racetrack, action proved tough, as an hard wreck gave this year's championship a tense start. Trident Racing's Stefano Coletti managed to score 8th place. A key result, as he scored his first point in the series and will be able to start tomorrow's Race 2 from the pole.
Rodolfo Gonzalez ended his race in 12th. The Venezuelan racer was victim of an unfortunate first-lap contact, as he took off on the rear wheels of Charles Pic, damaging his car and an suffering an hard hit to his back.
The red-flag interruption (due to a previous crash) allowed Gonzalez to come back to the pits, with the team making the needed repairs. Once back on-track, Rodolfo put together a good and flawless race.
After the checkered flag, he reported back pains, and was checked at the track's medical center. Further evaluation will be needed for him before entering Race 2. The second race of the Abu Dhabi weekend will take off tomorrow at 13:55, with live coverage in Italy by RaiSport 2

“I believe that both myself and the team should be really proud for our race today. The choice to make an early pit-stop for tire change has been great, because when I got back on-track,I ran several laps with a clean line, clocking some really fast laptimes. I almost caught Bird and Kral too while they were exiting the pits, but the team told me i was in 8th and I just managed things to the end.
In the closing laps, Chilton got closer, but while I was keeping him behind, he passed my by cutting the chicane. Race control gave me the spot back, and I'll be starting Race 2 from the pole position. I hope to have good start and manage the whole race at my best.”
Rodolfo Gonzalez (11th)
“At the first lap I was right behind Pic, and as I was so close to him, I didn't see the Safety Car sign. When he slowed down, I literally took off over his rear wheels, and I landed with a big hit at my back. Back at the pits, the team did all the repairs that were possible, but I raced with several broken components.
I fought hard in order to get to the end, and I'm happing for having accomplished the goal. Now I'm waiting for the doctors' veridict tomorrow to know if I'll be able to enter Race 2.”
