Int. Hillclimb Osnabrück news for the 2021 edition

Turbocharged engine and 4WD for Sébastien Petit: the new Nova NP 01-4

Sébastien Petit had a clear goal for 2020: “We were going to develop the car this year in order to be ready to perform next year”, the 2018 Osnabrück overall winner and 2019 FIA Int. Hill Climb Cup champion recently ex-plained in an interview for the new French YouTube channel “InsideHillclimb”.

Despite the coronavirus crisis the French driver has been making good progress: At his very first outing with his new car, at Náměšť nad Oslavou in the Czech Republic, he immediately took the victory, establishing a new outright hill record in the process. In the French championship the 2019 champion Geoffrey Schatz (Norma M20 FC turbo) is currently ahead of him.

Still, the brandnew Nova NP 01-4 is arguably the biggest sensation of this hill climb season. Nova Proto (ex Norma) and EMAP Motors have created a four-wheel drive Group E2-SC race car with a turbocharged 1750 cm3 Honda engine. The car produces 550 hp and weighs 620 kg. Sébastien Petit has decided to accept the higher weight compared to his Norma M20 FC in order to let the 4WD get the power of the turbocharged engine down in an optimal way.

“Using the engine power differently is a bet on the future”, he says, not least with a view to the international automobile federation FIA’s plans to limit performance in the higher cylinder capacity classes.

Sébastien Petit’s friends in Germany cannot wait to see him in the Nova NP 01-4 at the Int. 53rd Hill Climb Race Osnabrück at Uphöfener Berg in 2021.

No race without a sanitary protocol

Like any other event, motor sport events now need a sanitary protocol. MSC Osnabrück has already started thinking about how to safely organise the Int. 53rd Hill Climb Race Osnabrück in 2021 during a pandemic.

Of course, hill climb is a non-contact sport con-ducted by people who are “isolated” in a vehicle. However, how to perform administrative checking without many people having to come to the same small office within a short period of time? What happens if there is a suspected COVID-19 infection on site?

The German motor sport association (DMSB) stresses the organisers’ responsibility in preventing the spread of infections. At the same time, it makes a point of encouraging them. In two webinars DMSB officials recently explained the DMSB’s guidelines and answered organisers’ questions.

The FIA, the international automobile association, has also published comprehensive guidelines. Of course local public health regulations have to be observed. Ultimately, all regulations and guidelines aim at avoiding close personal contact between many different people.

To that end, as an example, fixed teams should be defined for preparing the track, and the drivers’ briefing can be held via mail or video. Last but not least, a sanitary delegate will watch over the actual implementation of the sanitary protocol.

Radio advertising for the 2020 hill climb race

The Antenne Niedersachsen radio channel has long since been a close media partner of the Int. Hill Climb Race Os-nabrück, and the radio spots announcing the event are traditionally presented by the “Herforder Pils” brand of the Warsteiner group. When the COVID-19 pandemic prevented this year’s race from being held, unfortunately the spots which had already been prepared had to be cancelled.

Or did they? In the morning of 22 July Antenne Niedersachsen inadvertently broadcast a spot promoting the Int. 53rd Hill Climb Race Osnabrück. Immediately they were contacted by a listener, probably a hill climb enthusiast, who pointed out the error.

This little anecdote shows that the Int. Osnabrück Hill Climb Race has not been forgotten even during difficult pandemic times.
