The tradition was respected! The 3rd edition of the Ypres Historic Regularity remained extremely indecisive until the last RT (Regularity Stage).

After all the main favourites had had different fortunes, the fight for victory was limited to a fascinating duel between Piraux-Monard (Renault 11 Turbo) and Kenis-Dupan (BMW 3.25i). During the last stage, the BMW dealer continued to win with a short lead of 16" seconds.

At the end of the first evening, marked by heavy rain, Kenis-Dupan was in 8th place overall. On Saturday afternoon, they had already moved up to 2nd position, 10"3 behind the leading duo Piraux-Monard. While the Renault team lost 9"3 in SS 23, Kenis-Dupan won the last two RTs, which gave them their first victory in Ypres.

"Yesterday we were tricked by the course designer, Bjorn, who is usually my team mate. He laughed a lot...", said Guino, who was not surprised afterwards. On wet and muddy roads, he put his rally experience to good use. It was also the first victory in Ypres for Anton Dupan.

"It's incredible. Today we almost got caught out again, but luckily I know Bjorn's tricks and I spotted the trap just in time. This was my second race with Guino, after our participation in the Neige et Glace in 2020. At first I had to find the rhythm but today it went well!"

Eric Piraux and Cathérine Monard, winners in Class 2, finished second in their Renault 11 Turbo. "We drove all day without paying too much attention to the rankings, to better concentrate on the conditions, which were already delicate enough. As a result, we may have lacked precision, but we are very satisfied with our podium finish."

With his team mate Pierre Colliard, Christophe Baillet finishes his first participation in Ypres on the third step of the podium. Less well than expected for the six-time winner of the Tour de Corse Historique VHRS: "We were caught twice by traps set by the organisation. That's the game. We had the speed and I enjoyed the difficult weather conditions. And, in Ypres, I discovered a beautiful historical city."

After having lost time on the RT 23 and on the penultimate exercise, Dominique Holvoet had to let Baillet pass him at the very end of the race. "It was a really difficult edition. On Saturday morning, there were very big puddles and you were only a passenger in the car, which could only suffer and... float.

On Friday evening we were still 2nd but we couldn't maintain this position because of traffic. Unfortunately, you can't do anything about that, even if you fight for every second. We had a good time and our Toyota MR2 worked well."

Fifth place finally went to Patrick Van Remoortel with his unique Apal Coupe. A great performance, together with his young navigator Olivier Dupont. Van Remoortel drove a particularly consistent race, although he had a brief moment of anxiety when he collided with Kurt Deklerck's Porsche 914/6 while trying to pass him in the mud.

Kurt Vanderspinnen and Renaud Herman finished in a fine 6th place with their Ford Cortina Lotus: "What weather conditions. We had everything from snow to fog to sun. It was a really difficult race because of the amount of mud on the track, but we like a good sporting challenge."

Mario Varrewaere drove his Porsche to an unexpected 7th place, ahead of José Lareppe and Jennifer Hugo in their famous Opel Kadett. The Top 10 was completed by Geert and Cedric De Jaeger in their Porsche and Eddy Snaet and Filip Deplancke, who started the last day as leaders. "The Top 10 was our goal. We succeeded", said Eddy Snaet, who has several participations in the modern Ypres Rally to his credit with Filip Depancke.

"Of course you are a bit disappointed when you start the second stage as leader and then fall back, but in this field a 10th place is very good. It was difficult to keep the pace because of the huge puddles and mud on the track."

The fact that this was a serious challenge from a sporting point of view was obvious from the ranking of a number of top riders. Just think of Yves Deflandre, winner of the first edition, who missed a control on Friday evening.

Johnny Delhez, winner of the public prize for his performance on the Lavano site, also had a very unfortunate race. He drove most of the last day with defective windscreen wipers. Kurt Deklerck and Aswin Pyck lost their top 5 on Friday evening when they slid in the mud with their Porsche 914/6.

With snow, almost continuous rain, water and tons of mud covering the roads, the 3rd edition of the Ypres Historic Regularity proved to be particularly difficult. The fact that it had to be shortened slightly did not have any sporting impact; it was a real challenge for both men and machines.
