Shields and Payne take wins in Atlanta

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES – SOUTHEAST DIVISION ATLANTA DRAGWAY, COMMERCE, GA

In the final results from Atlanta Dragway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Duane Shields, Bolder City, Nev., and Jay Payne, Claremont, Calif. took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

Shields worked his way through the field and ran 5.354 seconds at 270.75 mph in his final round victory over Randy Meyer, Spring Hill, Kan., who clocked in at 5.412 seconds, 262.18mph.

Payne faced off against Mickey Ferro, Stamford, Conn., and posted a winning run of 5.594 seconds, 256.70 mph in his ’10 Monte Carlo. Ferro drove to a 5.615second, 257.87 mph lap for his runner up finish.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Frank Aragona Jr., Freehold, N.J., in Comp Eliminator; Mike Tueffel, Browns Summit, N.C., in Super Stock; Ray Miller, Spring Hill, Fla., in Super Comp; David Tatum III, Palmetto, Ga., in Super Gas; Craig Marshall, Canal Winchester, Ohio, in Stock Eliminator and Donnie Gibbs Jr., Mooresville, N.C., in Super Street.  In the division’s Top Sportsman class it was Billy Vaughn, Knoxville, Tenn., taking the win while Phillip Oakley, Owensboro, Ky., won in Top Dragster. 

Southeast Division racers head back to Atlanta Dragway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, September 10-12.
