A massive 26 Super 2000 car field will battle at FDM Jyllandsringen
Which country is the best? Denmark or Sweden? For decades the debate has been raging between the two countries, and it is not only a question of football matches. Petrol heads have also discussed the matter. Sweden has achieved more success than Denmark in Formula 1. On the other hand Danmark has come out on top when it comes to classics like the 24 hours race at Le Mans. But which country is the best?

Jan Magnussen and James Thompson have been battling hard for the last couple of years at FDM Jyllandsringen, but now they will now face stronger opposition in the new Scandinavian Touring Car Cup (photo: DTC / Birger Vilén).
This year that question will be answered when a number of Northern Europe’s best racing drivers from two of the last decade’s strongest national Super 2000 championship in Europe will be racing each other on four occasions. The first time will be on April 24th-25th at FDM Jyllandsringen near Silkeborg, where the new Scandinavian Touring Car Cup kicks off.
The inaugural race meeting will be somewhat like the traditional Danish Swedish football matches. This time, however, 11 drivers from the Danish Touringcar Championship will be battling with 15 rivals from the Swedish Touring Car Championship.
With a field of 26 cars this is not only a massive entry by local standards. Internationally, the new Scandinavian Touring Car Cup is also impressive. When the FIA World Touring Car Championship began last month, there were 19 cars on the grid, while the FIA European Touring Car Cup had 11 Super 2000 cars.
But it will not only be the size of the entry that will make the Scandinavian Touring Car Cup impressive. Quality-wise it will have a number of top drivers and top teams from Denmark and Sweden.
Last year’s Danish driver and team champions now enter two BMW 320si E90 under the Team Bauhaus Telesikring banner. Drivers will be regular Le Mans class winners Casper Elgaard and Jan Magnussen, who in total have five Danish titles between them, and they are the most winning pair in Super 2000 racing in Denmark.
Hartmann Honda Racing might be a relatively new team in motor racing, but it has already made its presence felt. For the last two seasons Britain’s James Thompson has been racing for the team, where he last year came very close at winning the Danish title. This year, the Brit is paired with Tomas Engström of Sweden.
Another strong name from the Danish series is Jason Watt. The ex Formula 3000 driver became the first paralyzed driver to win a major national touring car championship back in 2002, and he is still competitive in his Seat Leon.
The Swedish entry is also strong. Polestar Racing will once again be fielding the works team for Volvo, where the two C30 cars once again will be raced by Sweden’s Robert Dahlgren and reigning Swedish Touring Car Champion, Tommy Rustad of Norway.
Last year the Norwegian finished on equal points with Thed Björk, who will be teaming up with Jan Nilsson in the two BMW 320si E90 cars that Flash Engineering will enter in the series. The Swedish BMW team was the first team to kick of the testing season at FDM Jyllandsringen, when they had their first run at the circuit before Easter.
