Mit einem hart erkämpften Podiumsplatz startete Porsche beim Zwölf-Stunden-Rennen in Sebring in die neue Saison der American Le Mans Series. Auf dem welligen Flugplatzkurs im Herzen Floridas brachten der Porsche-Werksfahrer Timo Bernhard (Homburg/Saar), Romain Dumas (Frankreich) und Helio Castroneves (Brasilien) den RS Spyder mit der Startnummer 7 nach vielen Rückschlägen auf dem dritten Platz in der Klasse LMP2 ins Ziel.
In der Anfangsphase des ältesten Sportwagenrennens der USA, das seine 55. Auflage erlebte, fuhr der in Weissach entwickelte und von Penske Motorsports mit Werksunterstürtzung von Porsche eingesetzte Sportprototyp an der Spitze mit.
Timo Bernhard (26 Jahre) und später auch Romain Dumas lagen sogar jeweils einige Runden in Führung. Doch dann musste der RS Spyder, mit dem sich Timo Bernhard im Qualifying mit neuem Rundenrekord die Bestzeit der Klasse LMP2 gesichert hatte, wegen Problemen mit der Stromversorgung mehrmals die Box ansteuern und fiel zurück.
"Mit der Bestzeit im Qualifying und der schnellsten Rennrunde in der Klasse LMP2 hat der neue RS Spyder bei seinem ersten Renneinsatz seine Konkurrenzfähigkeit unter Beweis gestellt", sagte Porsche-Sportchef Hartmut Kristen. "Leider haben uns ärgerliche Elektrikdefekte um den verdienten Lohn unserer Arbeit gebracht."
Timo Bernhard:" Es hat sehr gut für uns begonnen, aber leider kann während so einer langen Renndauer immer etwas passieren. Mit Platz 3 beim 1. Saisonrennen haben wir eine gute Ausgangsbasis für die nächsten Rennen und ich erwarte eine Saison mit sehr spannenden Rennen. In 14 Tagen gibt es schon die nächste Möglichkeit dafür."

The Aussie invasion of the Champ Car World Series continued today when well-known Australian businessman Paul Stoddart announced be had purchased a controlling interest in the Indianapolis-based CTE Racing - HVM Champ Car team.
