Ypres Historic Regularity 2021- Snaet-Deplancke leads after the first stage

The opening night of the 3rd edition of the Ypres Historic Regularity took place in wet conditions. The combination of a dark night and a very high pace, with a closed road stage in Boezinge and 8 regularity stages in the Coast-Diksmuide region, made this first stage treacherous.

Some of the big names were caught out, which allowed Eddy Snaet and Filip Deplancke (Porsche 911) to build up an unexpected lead.

Yves Deflandre misses a checkpoint

Yves Deflandre, winner of the first edition of the Ypres Historic Regularity, did not win a second time; he was caught at an intersection in the pouring rain on the RT of Slijpe:

"It was raining hard. I had to take a right turn but the main road also turned right, so I stayed on it without ever seeing the secondary road. We came back on the track, but with a 10 minute penalty, our race was over..."

Michel Decremer surprised

Michel Decremer, winner last year, was also surprised by a dead end in Gistel (RT 5). "A trap of the organisation we fell into. We realised that we should have taken the side street. Our pursuers saw us coming in the opposite direction, so they realised there was a trap. It's a pity that there were time controls on the next kilometre". Decremer will now have to climb from 25th place.

Geert and Cédric De Jaeger also lost a lot of time, but mainly because of faulty sensors, while Guino Kenis and Anton Dupan were also surprised by a trap on the RT3 (Eggewaertskapelle), but limited the damage; they are now in 8th position.

The leader at the end of the opening day is Eddy Snaet, seconded by Filip Deplancke, a duo that didn't let themselves be surprised. The leading group is very close, with Dominique Holvoet and Yannick Albert following at 1"5: "We have done a good stage. It was wet, but with its central engine our Toyota MR2 has a lot of traction. And I know the Diksmuide region well, from the VAS rallies we used to take part in, even if I don't have the best memories of them. Once I left the place badly..."

Third place went to Eric Piraux / Cathérine Monard and their famous Renault 11 Turbo, who lost time due to a less good calibration of the Tripmaster. Patrick Van Remoortel and Olivier Dupont followed in a nice and unexpected fourth place with their Apal Coupé: "It's certainly unexpected, because I have a problem with my eyesight in the dark.

Luckily Olivier has good eyes and we were able to avoid the traps but the pace could be better. I feel more comfortable in the daytime, so tomorrow we will try to keep up."

After a great opening night Kurt Deklerck and Aswin Pyck brought their Porsche 914/6 to 5th place: "We didn't have any particular surprises. Aswin knows the region well and that gave us a lot of confidence!

Baillet fighting back

Christophe Baillet and Christophe Colliard started as favourites, but the six-time winner of the Tour de Corse Historique VHRS was also surprised by... the Gistel dead end.

"I've never been to Ypres before and the beautiful historic Grote Markt is fantastic as a backdrop for a closed park", said the man from Nancy.

"The rain made the course even more difficult. We started well, but this mistake cost us a lot of time. But if we use three jokers, we should make up about half a minute. Everything is still possible..."

Incidentally, there are plenty of anecdotes on this rally. For example, Irishmen James O'Mahony and Frank Hussey, who plunged their Volvo into a deep ditch filled with water. The crew was not injured and the Swedish car was pulled out, but a restart is not possible.

Mirko Savic put on a show on the slippery cobblestones of the Grote Markt in Ypres, just as the rally drivers did. "I couldn't resist. How often are you with your Porsche in such a historic closed park", Mirko said hilariously.

Some  were less happy, like Jean-Christophe Henderickx and Isabelle Goeminne, who had problems all evening with their Alfa Romeo GT1300 Junior:

"We ran out of electricity after 3 RT and had to choose between the windscreen wipers or the headlights. We just couldn't use the headlights. Sometimes I would let another participant pass to print his wake, because I couldn't see anything else. Isabelle even wanted to stop! But we have reached the end of the stage. I hope we can find a way to have fun tomorrow..."

The second stage looks exciting, as Christophe Baillet doesn't give up, and even the 12th in the ranking, Dirk Van Rompuy, is less than a minute behind. With 17 other RT's on the programme today and the possible arrival of snow, it is definitely not over...
