2015 World Series by Renault - Round 6, Silverstone



It was a solid home race for the Arden Motorsport World Series by Renault team in Silverstone. The team came away with the biggest points haul weekend of the season, with both Nicholas and Egor scoring in both races. The team move up to fifth in the Team Standings.
 

It was declared a wet opening session on Saturday morning for Qualifying. Both Arden drivers posted their fastest lap times on their last runs of the session; Nicholas lining up seventh (1:42.487) and Egor eleventh (1:42.773) for the first race.


Nicholas had a good start moving up to 6th, where he ran until a battle with Nyck de Vries (DAMS) left him open for team-mate Egor to also get through, dropping the Canadian back to 8th where he picked up 4points.


Egor also made a good start and was running sixth mid-way through the race, until a throng of several cars clustered into a corner, also catching out Nicholas, dropping the Russian back to ninth. However, he managed to recover passing Nicholas and Jazeman Jafaar ((Fortec Motorsports) to finish 7th and pick up 6points.
 

It was a fresh start for the Arden duo on Sunday morning for the second Qualifying session, to determine their Race 2 grid positions. Nicholas posted a time quick enough to line up fourth on the grid (1:40.612), with team-mate Egor just 0.2seconds behind lining up ninth (1:40.820).


Nicholas briefly lost fourth place off the start to Brit Dean Stoneman (DAMS) but recovered with an overtake on lap 5. The Canadian made his mandatory pit stop on lap 9, not losing much ground, came out fifth running to take the chequered flag and pick up 10points.


Egor had a better start leaping to sixth before the pit window opened (lap 5). The Russian pitted on lap 10, four laps later overtaking Nick Yelloly (Lotus) and Gustav Malja (Strakka Racing) three laps to the end to finish sixth and take 8points.

“Silverstone is the race I was looking forward to most as it is my favourite track! Just the layout of the corners really make it enjoyable to drive in such a high downforce car.  After the practice sessions we were still missing a bit of time but I felt comfortable with the car and was feeling optimistic for qualifying. 


For Qualifying 1 I was consistently running in the top 3 for the first part of the session but on my second set of tyres I struggled with track position and had traffic on my fast lap, so I ended P7.  For sure the top 3 is where we should’ve been.


For Race 1 I got off to a good start but it turned out to be one of those races where I was always in the wrong place at the wrong time and always seemed to be on the losing end when there was a gaggle of 5 cars bunching up into a corner.  I was disappointed with finishing P8 as the car had the pace to be top 5.


Qualifying 2 was a much better session for us as I managed to put a good lap together without any traffic, which was good enough for P4, eventually P3 after a penalty was applied.


I didn’t have the best of starts or first lap in Race 2 and slipped back to P5 but from there we just didn’t have the pace to challenge the guys in front.  It turned out to be a pretty lonely race but was still satisfied with a P5.  The positives were it was the most points I’ve taken in one weekend so we just need to build on that for Nurburgring this weekend!”

“It was a difficult start to the weekend initially, as I struggled a bit through some parts of the track so unfortunately we started a bit far back for both races. We still made a good progress in both races however, overtaking people and I managed to score some points, which is always good!


So overall I am quite happy how the weekend had progressed as we had a lot of good, clean fights in the races. Thank you to the team for the car, as it was really competitive in a race.”
