Yifei Ye holds off Zane Maloney in strategic race battle at Paul Ricard

CryptoTower Racing Team’s Yifei Ye held off pressure from Carlin’s Zane Maloney to win the second Euroformula race at Circuit Paul Ricard.

The Chinese driver started from pole and made a good start, while his race one-winning team-mate Lukas Dunner was passed at the Minstral Straight chicane on the opening lap by the charging Maloney.

Maloney took a few tenths of a second out of Ye’s lead, but the driver at the front then responded and the pair were locked in a stalemate, with Dunner not far behind, as they raced away from the rest of the field.

At the end of the 16-lap encounter Ye was only one second ahead of Maloney, with Dunner completing the podium a further 1.5s back.

“I  was really surprised by the pace [Maloney] had and I was having to push a lot to keep his car behind," said Ye. "Paul Ricard is not like Spa, with the dirty air his car couldn’t follow with my pace, so I could control my pace so when he was coming close to me, I would increase that pace.”

Andreas Estner consolidated his second place in the championship standings by finishing in fourth place, while Maloney’s team-mate Ido Cohen made a great start to challenge Estner and get a top result in fifth.

As in race one, Motopark’s Niklas Krutten and Double R Racing’s Ayrton Simmons battled over the next position, with it falling in favour of Krutten on the final lap. Next up in the points was Krutten’s team-mate Cameron Das, the third CryptoTower car of Rui Andrade and Drivex School’s Glenn van Berlo.

The Drivex School drivers had troubled races, with van Berlo being spun around early on, and Motopark’s Manuel Maldonado doing the same to van Berlo’s team-mate Shihab Al Habsi later in the race. Maldonado had stalled on the grid but charged up the order, only to undo his progress with the Al Habsi clash. He ended up finishing a distant 14th, behind VAR’s Sebastian Estner and Alexandre Bardion, and the unfortunate Al Habsi.

Ye and Dunner fill the Paul Ricard race two front row for CryptoTower

CryptoTower Racing Team took a fourth Euroformula pole position in four attempts with success in the second qualifying session at Circuit Paul Ricard.

Championship leader Yifei Ye and his returning team-mate Lukas Dunner, who claimed his first Euroformula win in Saturday’s race, worked with but also against each other in a battle for pole that went down to the chequered flag.

Ye was first to finish his qualifying run and set a 1m53.263s lap, and Dunner was just 0.133 seconds off that when he crossed the line a few seconds later.

“I think the gap between me and Lukas is pretty close the whole weekend, so it was about who can deliver that lap at the end,” said poleman Ye. “Yesterday I missed it slightly in qualifying, and today we made it. [Yesterday’s] race has proved that it’s really hard to overtake, and the tyres seem to be pretty consistent throughout the race so I think the overtaking will be very hard. My goal will be to make a good start.

“As we can see, the wind is picking up this afternoon so it will be a hard race. Hopefully we can manage it.”

Behind the front row was Carlin’s Zane Maloney, who had put himself on provisional pole earlier in the session and looked like he had the pace to match the more experienced CryptoTower pair. He ended up third on the grid with a time close to the top four, and he will start alongside Van Amersfoort Racing’s Andreas Estner.

Motopark’s trio of drivers were fifth, seventh and ninth in the order of Manuel Maldonado, Niklas Krutten and Cameron Das, and between them were Carlin’s Ido Cohen and the sole Double R Racing entry driven by Ayrton Simmons.

Rui Andrade, in the third CryptoTower car, had a dramatic session that involved an early spin but recovered well to qualify 10th.

Drivex School’s Shihab Al Habsi and Glenn van Berlo were closely matched in 11th and 12th, while VAR’s Sebastian Estner and local hero Alexandre Bardinon will fill the seventh row on the starting grid.

First win for Dunner as Dallara 320 breaks records at Paul Ricard

CryptoTower Racing Team driver Lukas Dunner was rewarded for his patience as he claimed a dominant first Euroformula win in race one at Paul Ricard.

The series returnee took pole on Saturday morning then controlled the pace in the race later in the day, with only team-mate and points leader Yifei Ye able to match his record-breaking laptimes.

Dunner had to make a great start from pole to avoid the drama of the opening lap, where Ye took to the run-off to maintain his position ahead of Van Amersfoort Racing’s Andreas Estner and Carlin's fast-starting Ido Cohen.

The top two pulled away at sometimes more than a second per lap as they pushed each other to the limit, and while Dunner's gap to Ye was comfortable, Ye's gap to Estner was massive.

Cohen kept with Estner but couldn't quite make the podium, and the same could be said of Double R Racing's Ayrton Simmons in sixth after he hassled Motopark's Niklas Krutten for the vast majority of the race.

Krutten’s team-mate Manuel Maldonado was initially in that battle for position but ended up having to fend of CryptoTower's Rui Andrade for eighth, while Drivex School's Glenn van Berlo did put a successful pass on Motopark returnee Cameron Das for ninth.

Shihal Al Habsi watched them closely behind and brought the second Drivex car home in 11th, while VAR's Sebastien Estner and Alexandre Bardinon finished at the back as the result of being victims of the first lap drama.

Free practice pacesetter Zane Maloney couldn't get his Carlin-run car to the grid, and ended up not starting the race.
