DPR disappointment after promising start

David Price Racing (DPR) had only one car running in the final day of racing at the Hungarian round of the GP2 Series with Christian Bakkerud sidelined due to a recurring back problem. Andy Soucek continued with his first visit to the Hungaroring circuit, starting from 12th place in the Sprint race, but disappointingly unable to reach the finish after gearbox problems late in the race.

The 28 lap early morning sprint race was held in warm, cloudy weather, with slightly lower temperatures than yesterday’s feature race, one of the most challenging events on the calendar this season. At the start of the sprint event Soucek was off the line well, but in the melee of cars running through the first corner he was pushed back one place. Soucek pushed on, but was unable to make headway and maintaining position.

He had to retire from the race after 21 laps with gearbox electronics issues which denied him another race distance experience in Hungary. Bakkerud, forced to retire from yesterday’s feature race with extreme pain from a trapped nerve in his back, was keen to compete today. The team fitted him into the car this morning, but the young Danish driver was in too much discomfort and the team had no option but to withdraw this entry from the sprint race.

David Price, Team Principal, DPR: "It’s been another weekend with a promising start and disappointing finish. Andy had two very encouraging sessions on Friday and it certainly looked as if we might get our first points, but it just didn’t happen. Having said this, I think we’re are seeing both drivers learning from their rookie season of GP2 and their pace in yesterday’s race continues to build our confidence.

Christian is understandably upset to have a return of his back problems. I guess the only consolation for him is that we have the traditional summer break now, so he has some time to recuperate."

Soucek said of his weekend, "This track is very challenging, with so many corners in such a short distance demanding so much from you, so it was a good learning experience. We made a step forward in qualifying, so I’m happy from that. Yesterday I made a mistake pushing too hard and that cost me quite a few positions and I was a bit annoyed with myself as we should have had a better result and possibly a points finish. I’m feeling more positive after this weekend as we have definitely made real progress and the car feels good."

Bakkerud explained his situation saying, "I want to get this sorted now once and for all and when I go home to Denmark next week I will see a sports Doctor recommended by DASU (Danish Automobil Sports Union) and hopefully get some help. I’m feeling pretty low at the moment, but I’m sure it can be sorted before the next race weekend."

The GP2 Series now takes a three week break before returning to track action in Istanbul, supporting the FIA Formula One World Championship Grand Prix of Turkey.
