Formula BMW Pacific - Round 6  SEPANG MALAYSIA

Formula BMW Junior Carlos Sainz Junior (ESP/15) topped a Eurointernational clean-sweep of the podium after Round 6 of Formula BMW Pacific at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit today.

Second across the line in the 10-lap race was Sainz Jr.’s team mate Michael Lewis (USA/19), taking his fourth podium of the weekend, followed by winner of Rounds 3 and 5, Daniil Kvyat (RUS/16), rounding out the podium.

Fourth for the second time in as many races was Richard Bradley (SIN/18/Eurasia Motorsport), who had started from 8th on the grid.  Behind him was Formula BMW Pacific Junior Jordan Oon (AUS/20/E-Rain Racing) who is showing improvement each time out, with Colombian youngster Oscar Tunjo (Meritus) once again putting on a an incredible charge from the back of the grid, this time to finish 6th.

With the top three finishers all guest drivers, Bradley took the full points for the win, increasing his margin at the top of the Driver Classification and Rookie Cup standings to 34 points head of 2nd placed driver, Tunjo.  Oon climbs from 7th overall and 5th in the Rookie Cup to 3rd in both.

Sainz Jr. didn’t put a wheel wrong during his pole-to-flag run, despite a serious challenge from Kvyat off the start.  As the Spaniard pulled away, Kvyat came under attack from team mate Lewis, eventually forfeiting his position.  The American held on to 2nd to the flag.

Meanwhile, Briton James Birch (17/Motaworld Racing) came to grief on Lap 2 after he was clipped by Nabil Jeffri (MAS/16/Eurasia Motorsport) and flipped off the track.  Jeffri, who also clipped Calvin Wong (MAS/18/PETRONAS Mofaz Racing) went on to finish 11th.   Despite a damaged wishbone, Wong, 3rd in Round 5, still managed to finish in 16th.

The penultimate lap saw an intense challenge between the Meritus pair of Dustin Sofyan (INA/15) and Pasin Lathouras (THA/16), with the Indonesian driver crashing out after the pair made contact.

Formula BMW Pacific Junior Jesse Dixon (AUS/17/Atlantic Racing Team) was 7th, his best finish of the season so far, while fellow Junior Kotaro Sakurai (JPN/15/Eurasia Motorsport) worked his way through the field from the back of the grid to finish 8th.

Malaysia’s Natasha Seatter (17/PETRONAS Mofaz Racing) was excluded from Round 6 by officials for causing an avoidable accident in the previous race.

Formula BMW Pacific continues in August with four rounds schedule for the brand-new Formula 1 track currently being built in South Korea.

Formula BMW Pacific Driver Quotes:

Carlos Sainz Junior, winner, Round 6:
“I’m very happy with the result, especially because some bad luck yesterday meant the best I could do this morning was 7th. In this race I felt really very confident. Michael and Daniil were also very fast and over this weekend, you can see that it was our team who really was perfect.”

Michael Lewis, 2nd, Round 6:
“I was able to overtake Daniil on Turn 2 and although Carlos was quite a bit ahead of me, I tried to push for the next few laps. I caught up a bit during the middle of the race, but it was very hard as our pace was much the same. Even though I was on the podium four times this weekend, I am disappointed I didn’t get a win. However, I was very fast and had speed, so it’s more than looking at victories, but of course, every driver wants to win.”

Daniil Kvyat, 3rd, Round 6:
“I tried to overtake Carlos on Turn 1 but he resisted very well, he defends very well, and when I tried again, Michael was able to get inside of me and overtake me. From there it was difficult to get the same rhythm as Carlos and Michael, but overall, I am quite happy with the weekend. I was fast and had two wins and now we will see what happens next in Europe.”

Jordan Oon, top Formula BMW Pacific Junior, Round 6
: “Yes, I’m happy with that.  I didn’t make any mistakes for the whole race.  It’s the first session this weekend without making a big mistake, so I’m learning.  I feel I’ve made big improvements since the last meeting, and we just need a tiny bit more before Korea.”
