Season finale as team man for Thomas Biagi in Vallelunga, stage of the final round of the Superstars Series 2011.




After the fourth time in qualifying held yesterday, the Italian driving for BMW Team Italy kept the starting position from lights to flag in race one and avoided to put pressure on his team mate Alberto Cerqui, who had an advantage in the fight for the title of Italian Champion.


The victory went to Andrea Bertolini (Maserati), followed by Alessandro Pier Guidi (Maserati).


Race two was less lucky and had its crucial moment in the initial stages when Biagi tried to defend Cerqui but has been victim of a series of contacts that cost him several positions. Despite a bent suspension, the reigning champion managed to end the race in tenth position harvesting some points. On the top step of the podium was again Bertolini (Maserati), followed by Morbidelli (Audi).


The final classification of the Italian Superstars 2011 Championship sees Biagi ending fourth at 104 points, 22 shy of the title winner Alberto Cerqui (BMW); the second place went to Max Pigoli (Mercedes, 114) and the third to Luigi Ferrara (Mercedes, 111).


In the International Series, the classification takes into account only some rounds of the season but it does not assign a CSAI or FIA title, Biagi ended fourth of a classification still sub-judice due to a post race complaint not involving BMW Team Italy and that will be debated in appeal on a later date to be decided.

"As member of BMW Team Italy I am satisfied for giving my contribution, even partial, to obtaining another Italian title and the teams' one. After the fourth place behind Cerqui in race one, I aimed at ending the season on race two's podium but in the initial stages when I was trying to protect Alberto I got bumped and this compromised my race.


The balance of my season is positive anyway: for the second year in a row I reached the final round fighting for the Italian title and for the leadership in the International series which confirms the very good job done during 2011 with the teams' men to whom I'd like to send my thanks".
